Opening Odds: New York -109/11

Wow! That is all you can say about last night’s New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins game. If there was still an ESPN Classic station, this game would definitely be on their future schedule. The Yankees stormed back from a six-run deficit, took the lead in the eighth inning, only to see that lead given back in the bottom of the inning. Then, New York took a 12-11 lead into the bottom of the ninth before Minnesota sent it to extra innings. Didi Gregorius went 5-for-5 with seven RBI and scored the go-ahead run on Gleyber Torres’ RBI single in the 10th inning, but that isn’t even the best part of the game. The Twins loaded the bases in the bottom of the 10th when Max Kepler ripped what appeared to be a bases-clearing shot in the gap, but Aaron Hicks made a diving catch to end the game and give the Yankees a dramatic 14-12 victory to even up their three-game series. It was New York’s sixth win in eight games and extended their lead to 10 games in the AL East with the Red Sox coming up this weekend. The AL Central-leading Twins have nine homers in the series, with Miguel Sano launching a three-run blast and two-run shot on Tuesday to reach 100 in his career. Nelson Cruz and Jorge Polanco have gone deep in each game as well for a Minnesota team that has lost six of its last nine.

Pitchers: Yankees – J.A. Happ (8-5, 4.86 ERA) | Twins – Jake Odorizzi (11-4, 3.18)

J.A. Happ has been struggling to get past six innings, but managed to earn a win over Colorado last time out by striking out eight while pitching two-run ball over five innings. The lefty has a 2.87 ERA over his last three starts since allowing eight runs against Houston on June 23rd. Happ allowed two home runs in a 7-3 loss to the Twins on May 4th in 5.2 innings. He threw six scoreless innings at Minnesota last September in his first start against the Twins as a member of the Yankees.

Jake Odorizzi has also had trouble pitching deep into games and the long ball has hurt him recently. The righty has served up six homers in his last four starts and allowed three runs over five innings of work last time out against Oakland. Odorizzi allowed just two hits while striking out eight in six scoreless innings against Happ on May 4th. Overall, he has a 7-8 record and 4.06 ERA in 17 career appearances (16 starts) versus New York.

I don’t know how you top last night’s game, but these lineups will certainly try. Both teams are rolling offensively while Happ and Odorizzi have had their struggles. I’m going to predict a bunch more homers and runs in this contest. Take the over.
