NY Yankees (93-50) at Boston (76-65)
When: Sunday, September 8, 2019
Where: Fenway Park,
Boston, MA
Time: 8:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: New York -125/11

The New York Yankees have nothing to worry about in trying to wrap-up the AL East crown, but still have a lot to play for as we head to the stretch. New York and the Houston Astros are considered the two favorites to represent the American League in the Fall Classic and are dead-even heading into Sunday’s action for the No. 1 seed and homefield advantage should they meet in the ALCS. The Yankees go for a series win over rival Boston on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball after evening the series Saturday with a 5-1 victory. New York received a strong effort from starter J.A. Happ as he tossed six shutout innings while allowing just two hits to earn his 12th win. Edwin Encarnacion and Gary Sanchez combined for all five RBI as the Yanks beat the Red Sox for the sixth time in seven tries. Boston is pretty much out of contention and have used nothing but relief pitchers for the first two games of this series due to injuries in the rotation. Rick Porcello will look to give the bullpen a rest tonight when he opposes Masahiro Tanaka. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts recorded his 1,000th career hit Saturday, becoming the third player in Red Sox history to reach the mark before age 27.

Pitchers: Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (10-8, 4.42 ERA) | Red Sox – Rick Porcello (12-11, 5.63)

Tanaka pitched well enough to win last time out but the Yanks’ bats went cold in a 7-0 loss to the Texas Rangers on Monday. The Japanese native allowed just two runs and seven hits in six innings after tossing seven shutout innings in his previous start at Seattle. Tanaka was hit hard on July 25th at Boston, allowing 12 runs on as many hits in 3.1 innings in the 19-3 setback.

Porcello was on the other end of that July 25th blowout and allowed three runs over six innings to pick up the easy win. He was hit hard at home to Minnesota on Tuesday, surrendering six runs on eight hits (two homers) in four innings. Porcello is 8-8 with a 5.44 ERA in 18 home starts with a 1.37 WHIP and 16 homers allowed.

Normally you wouldn’t bet teams who are so far ahead in their division this late in the season, but the Yankees are still in the running for homefield advantage, and let’s face it, they’re playing their rival. Look for Tanaka to outpitch the struggling Porcello here and help lead the Yankees to a series victory.
