Europe will get their first taste of Major League Baseball this weekend when London hosts the biggest rivalry in the sport featuring the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. Every MLB stadium is unique in its own way, but London Stadium will be something completely different and at first glance, one could say this may be a homer-fest. The 66,000 seat stadium will have baseball dimensions of just 330 feet down the lines and 385 feet to center field, but does have a 16-foot wall the ball needs to carry over. You’ve all seen how much foul territory is at the Oakland Coliseum, right? Well, this game will feature more than 4,000 square feet of room than where the A’s play. Both games – Saturday and Sunday – are sold out with the average ticket price hovering around 250 pounds (about $320 U.S. dollars) with the least expensive being 30 pounds ($38). Boston will be considered the home team and bat last in both games, which will be played on artificial turf. The Yankees own a 4-1 edge so far over the Red Sox in the season series and have a nine-game lead over Boston in the AL East and 6.5 over second place Tampa Bay. Not all is lost for the Red Sox, however, as they are right in the thick of the wild card race. Boston is coming over after a dismal homestand in which it went 3-3 against sub-.500 teams Toronto and the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees are trying to extend their already major league record of home runs in consecutive games to 30 and have won 11 of their last 12 games overall.
Pitchers: Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (5-5, 3.21 ERA) | Red Sox – Rick Porcello (5-7, 4.52)
Masahiro Tanaka comes across the pond as probably the most reliable starting pitcher on the Yankees staff at the moment after going 2-0 with a 2.49 ERA in his last three starts. The most recent was a no-decision in a 7-5 victory over Houston after he allowed two runs and eight hits in six innings. Tanaka is 8-4 with a 4.35 ERA in 18 starts against the Red Sox including defeating them in the 2018 AL Division Series.

Rick Porcello is hoping to end June with a little momentum after going 1-3 with a 4.75 ERA in five starts so far this month. He allowed five runs, eight hits and four walks in six innings of a 6-1 loss to Toronto on Sunday. Boston won his previous two starts after he surrendered just two total runs over 13.2 innings in those two outings against Texas and Minnesota. Porcello is 10-9 with a 3.32 ERA in 23 starts against the Yankees and allowed five runs and nine hits in 4.2 innings earlier this month.
I’m not touching the total in this one, as these dimensions are ripe for a slugfest, but Tanaka has been pitching very well of late and the Red Sox are struggling. The Yankees are on a roll right now no matter where they play, so I’ll take New York in this first game. We’ll have a preview and free pick for the Sunday game as well.
