The New York Yankees kept their hopes alive to win the American League East last night with a thrilling 6-4 win in 10 innings. Greg Bird hit a three-run homer in the 10th inning giving the Yankees the lead for good after closer Andrew Miller blew the save in the 9th. The win moved New York to within 2.5 games of Toronto with one game remaining. The Yankees will go with Ivan Nova tonight in place of Masahiro Tanaka. Nova hasn’t pitched since September 12th when he was hit hard by Toronto in a 10-7 loss. Overall, Nova is 6-8 with a very high 5.11 ERA. Against the Blue Jays this year, Nova is 1-2 with an ERA of 8.35. The Yankees are hoping Tanaka only misses one start due to a strained right hamstring.
The loss last night won’t panic the Blue Jays. They’ve seen the Yankees get close the last month and a half and they’ve always responded. Marcus Stroman gets another crack at the Yankees tonight. In his first start of the season 2 weeks ago, Stroman was roughed up by the Yankees, but managed to get the win over Nova. Stroman settled down in his last start limiting the Red Sox to just 1 run over 7 innings. He’s been on the disabled list all season because of a kneed injury. He had a fine rookie season last year going 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA. The Blue Jays need pitching and Stroman could give them the lift they’re looking for heading into October.
We managed to pull out a miraculous cover on the over last night. Let’s go back to that again tonight. The Yankees hit Stroman a few weeks ago and I know the Blue Jays can hit Nova. Hopefully tonight, we don’t have to wait until extra innings to hit the total. I say it goes over 9 by the 7th inning.
