The most prized free agent in the offseason was without a doubt Giancarlo Stanton. Now, when you’re the most coveted player in the league, it’s only natural to feel some pressure in your new setting, especially if that setting is in a New York Yankees uniform. In his first game with his new team, Stanton acted like he had been there all his career, launching the second pitch he saw into the seats to help the Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-1 in the season opener for both teams on Thursday. Stanton then capped-off his Yankees debut with a solo shot in the ninth to finish 3-for-5 with four RBI. It was New York’s first opening day victory since 2011, and set the tone for what could be a magical season. Stanton is now 9-for-16 with five blasts in four career games at Rogers Centre as the Blue Jays look to even their four game series on Friday night behind Aaron Sanchez, who opposed Masahiro Tanaka. Toronto’s offense was shut down by Luis Severino and the Yankees’ bullpen to the tune of two hits, and All-Star third baseman Josh Donaldson had issues in the field, bouncing a couple of throws to first base. New York’s vaunted bullpen allowed one run on one hit while recording five strikeouts and zero walks in 3.1 innings.

Pitchers: Yankees – Masahiro Tanaka (2017: 13-12, 4.74 ERA) | Blue Jays – Aaron Sanchez (2017: 1-3, 4.25)

Tanaka is coming off his fourth straight season of 12 wins or more, but allowed an alarming 35 home runs. He was clutch down the stretch however, allowing two runs and zero homers over his last four starts, including the postseason. One of those was a 15-strikeout, three-hit gem against the Blue Jays in late September after he allowed eight runs in Toronto one week earlier.

The Blue Jays were expecting big things from Sanchez after his 2016 season in which he recorded a 15-2 mark and 3.00 ERA, but he won only once last year as recurring blister issues limited him to only eight starts. Sanchez is coming off a good spring including his last outing in which he allowed one run and two hits over 6.1 innings versus Atlanta. Sanchez made three starts against New York in 2016, going 1-0 with a 1.83 ERA.

The Blue Jays edged the Yankees 10-9 in the season series last year.

Toronto is going to have all sorts of issues this season, but Sanchez could be a bright spot if he can regain some of his 2016 form. Sanchez is not going to start off 2018 on a high note however, as the Yankees’ bats will prove to be too much, while Tanaka cruises to a win.
