The New York Yankees were supposed to come out of the gate this season and dominant their opponents with a lineup for the ages. It didn’t exactly work out that way for the first half of April, but as the weather has warmed up, so have the Baby Bombers. New York has now won eight games in a row after last night’s 11-1 victory over the struggling Los Angeles Angels, and will go for the three-game sweep on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. New York scored five runs in each of the first two innings on Saturday en route to the easy triumph that extended its winning streak and kept the Angels reeling. Aaron Judge and Miguel Andujar recorded three hits apiece while Aaron Hicks drove in three runs for the Yankees, who haven’t lost since dropping an 8-5 decision in Toronto on April 20th. New York has made it look easy as well, outscoring the competition 62-17 while allowing one run four times. Catcher Gary Sanchez has scored a run in seven consecutive games after scoring three times on Saturday. Zack Cozart homered and Luis Valbuena recorded two of the Angels’ seven hits Saturday, as L.A. has lost seven of eight at home and eight of 11 overall. Valbuena came into last night’s game with just two hits total over his last nine contests. Shortstop Andrelton Simmons was scratched from the Angels’ lineup on Saturday with a sore right forearm and is questionable for the series finale. Tyler Skaggs will try and stop the bleeding when he takes the mound for Los Angeles, opposite veteran CC Sabathia.
Pitchers: Yankees – CC Sabathia (1-0, 1.86 ERA) | Angels – Tyler Skaggs (3-1, 2.96)
Sabathia last six innings last time out – his longest outing of 2018 – and was solid against the Twins, holding them to an unearned run and two hits for his first victory of the season. Sabathia has allowed eight runs in four starts, but only four of them have been earned. Baltimore did the most of the damage with three solo homers off the veteran lefty on April 6th. Sabathia has made 21 career starts against the Angels, going 9-9 with two complete games and a 3.91 ERA.
Skaggs improved to 3-1 last time out when he shutout the Houston Astros for seven innings, allowing just four hits in the 2-0 victory. Skaggs was hit hard in his previous outing, however, allowing six runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings by Boston at home on April 18th. He has made 62 starts in his career but will be facing New York for the first time.
Skaggs has been L.A.’s best pitcher so far, but he’ll be no match for the red-hot Yankees offense. Sabathia may not pitch deep into games anymore, but he’ll do just enough for the improving Yankees’ bullpen to take over and finish it off.
