Warriors vs Raptors Preview & Free Pick | NBA Finals [Game 5]

Golden State (1-3) at Toronto (3-1)
When: Monday, June 10th, 2019
Where: Scotiabank Arena,
Toronto, Ontario
Time: 9:00 ET | TV: ABC
Opening Odds: Toronto -3/212

The Golden State Warriors know all too well that a 3-1 series lead isn’t the end of the world, but they are now on the other end of it in this year’s NBA Finals. The Warriors blew a 3-1 lead to LeBron James and Cleveland a few years ago, but now have to beat the Toronto Raptors in three straight games to pull off that same feat. The Raptors convincingly beat the Warriors in Oakland in Games 3 and 4 and now have three chances to win their first ever championship, with the first one coming Monday night at home in Game 5. The last major sporting event with as much significance in the city of Toronto was Game 6 of the 1993 World Series when Joe Carter hit one of the most memorable home runs in MLB history in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Jays rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies. The Raptors are now -1000 to win the NBA Title, while Golden State is +550. Golden State did rally from down 3-1 in the 2016 Western Conference semifinals against Kevin Durant’s Oklahoma City Thunder, but injuries have hampered this team. Guard Klay Thompson, who at out Game 3 with a hamstring injury, scored 28 points on 11-of-18 shooting in Game 4, but Durant is still a question mark with a calf injury. The underdog has covered seven of the past eight meetings between these teams.

The Warriors looked flat and tired in Friday’s 105-92 loss in Game 4, but there were two bright spots. The first was Thompson returning and looking healthy and the second was big man Kevon Looney, who made a surprise return. He was reportedly out for the series with a collarbone injury suffered in Game 2 but was back and had 10 points and six rebounds in 20 minutes. Star point guard Steph Curry is one of the few healthy players left on the Golden State roster and did everything he could with 47 points in Game 3’s loss before finishing with 27 points on 9-of-22 shooting in Game 4. Power forward Draymond Green is averaging 13.5 points, 9.0 rebounds and 8.8 assists in the series.

Toronto is 3-0 this post-season when it has a chance to win a playoff series at home. They beat Orlando 115-96 in Game 5, Philadelphia 92-90 in Game 7 on Kawhi Leonard’s four-bouncer, and Milwaukee 100-94 in Game 6. Kawhi Leonard is the -1000 favorite to win the NBA Finals MVP after scoring 36 points in Game 4, including 17 of the team’s 37 in the third quarter when Toronto took control. Fred VanVleet continued his stellar play this series with eight points, six assists and four rebounds in Game 4, but got knocked in the face with an elbow that required stitches, but he’ll be in there Monday. All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry was held to 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting in Game 4 but handed out seven assists and contributed to the defensive effort against Curry with three steals. Center Serge Ibaka recorded a postseason-high 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting in Game 4.

I rode the Raptors in Games 3 and 4 in Oakland and I’m going to take them again. This Golden State team looks exhausted, but who wouldn’t after playing into June for five straight seasons. Toronto has already closed out three series this postseason at home, so why not another one.

Pick: Raptors -1.5
