The slumping Portland Trail Blazers host the Oklahoma City Thunder in hopes of gaining some momentum for a run at the playoffs. Currently, the Blazers are in 11th place in the Western Conference, but only three games behind 8th place Denver for the final playoff spot. Portland has dropped seven of their last nine games including a 120-113 overtime loss in Detroit which ended a 1-3 road trip. The Trail Blazers were sloppy with the ball against Detroit as they committed 24 turnovers (to eight for the Pistons) with the starting backcourt of shooting guard C.J. McCollum (six) and Damian Lillard (four) combining for 10. Lillard did score 34 points against the Pistons and is averaging 31.7 over the past three games. The offense is scoring points, but the defense can’t seem to slow the other team enough this season. Portland ranks 26th in the league in points allowed per game (110.2) and they let the opposition shoot 37.8% from 3-point territory (28th). Jusuf Nurkic, who the Blazers acquired at the deadline from Denver, scored 19 points against Detroit to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. It his most points scored this season since opening night (23). The Blazers will get the league-worst Brooklyn Nets next before hitting the road again.

The Thunder are not in danger of missing the playoffs despite being the seventh-seed currently. They lead eighth-seed Denver by 7.5 games and are only a game and a half from being the four-seed. Oklahoma City ended a perfect 4-0 homestand with a 109-106 victory against one of the better defenses in the league – the Utah Jazz – and are only 1.5 games behind them in the Northwest Division. Russell Westbrook can match Wilt Chamberlain (1967-68) for the second-most triple-doubles in a season against Portland tonight. Westbrook has reeled off four consecutive triple-doubles to join Chamberlain (31) and Oscar Robertson (41 in 1961-62) as the only players to record 30 or more in a season. Westbrook has scored over 40 points in each of his last two triple-doubles, including 43 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Utah. His five 40-point triple-doubles this season join James Harden (also this season) and Robertson (1963-64) for most in NBA history. Westbrook scored 42 points in a home win over Portland early last month and has five 40-point outings in the past 14 games.

I’m not picking against the Thunder right now with the way Westbrook has been playing and the Blazers are reeling. Portland is 1-8 ATS in their last nine games overall and I don’t see them turning it around tonight. I’ll take the small road dog.

Pick: Thunder +1.5
