This year’s Super Bowl is set with the good old Patriots making their 9th appearance in the Tom Brady era. For many, (at least in Boston), this never gets old. For others, well let’s play nice and say, “it gets old”! The problem is not that it’s the Patriots, the problem is, “who to bet on”? Where do we go in this game? The number is set, the oddsmakers have spoken and the line has moved from an opening 1 ½, to the Patriots -2 ½. Everybody jumped on the number early for one reason, when have you ever seen the Patriots laying just 1 ½? It’s rare. They were underdogs going into the AFC Championship game at Arrowhead and look at the outcome. The Patriots keep winning. This team knows how to win big games and they have five Super Bowls under their belt.
The Rams are not chump change. This team is very good and they have shown the world that their 13-3 regular season record was no fluke. They got it done against the Saints. Take nothing away from them. So there was a bad call, who cares? Really, the Rams came to play the game and they came to win the game and that’s what they did. They left it all on the field in New Orleans and they walked out of the Superdome, winners. That’s the bottom line.
The Patriots are traditionally slow starters. If you don’t believe that, just go back to the Atlanta game a couple of years ago. Go back to nearly every regular season game they played and the stats will tell you, they are a second half team.
Bill Belichick is the greatest coach of all time in the NFL, when it comes to second half adjustments. There are two football coaches that come to mind when thinking of the second half; Belichick and Nick Saban. These two can be down by 28 at the half and still find a way. There is something about the motivational skills and the second half game planning that just simply works.
The Rams on the other hand are more of a light it up, run and gun, fast paced, out of the gate, barn-burning team that will bring it early and bring it often. The Rams know they need this early. They are not stupid and for two weeks, they will be game planning the first half. The biggest first half of their lives is about to be played and it’s a guarantee they will be ready and wanting the lead going into that locker room.
Take a look at the first half line in this game—
Patriots (-1/2 -105) (Total 27 ½) Money Line -130
Rams (+ ½ -115) Money Line— Even
Look, the Rams are a quick scoring team out of the gate. The Patriots are methodical and they grind and end up with 38! The Rams–win or lose this game; you can count on them to come out fired up and keep the first half extremely close and or winning. In our estimation, the Rams are the deal of the century in the first half. Maybe you see it different and want to go the other way and if you have a great reason to believe in the numbers, then by all means, pull the trigger. The beauty of the number either way, it’s just a half—meaning the Patriots just need to be winning.
