Opening Odds: New York -190/11

To say the Colorado Rockies are in a free-fall would be an understatement. The gap in the National League Wild Card race is widening and the Rockies have dropped to 4.5 games behind the Phillies, Cardinals, and Brewers in the race for the second spot after losing their sixth straight game on Saturday to the New York Yankees and the pitching has been a mess. Saturday starter Antonio Senzatela couldn’t even get out of the second inning, allowing six runs and seven hits in the 11-5 setback to New York. Colorado has lost 13 of their last 15 overall and have a staff ERA of 8.90 in their last 10 games. One bright spot on Saturday was 3B Nolan Arenado’s three-run homer to extend his hitting streak to five games. The Yankees are trending in the opposite direction and are very close to running away with the American League East. After taking the series opener 8-2, the Yankees extended their winning streak to five straight games and improve to 14-0-1 over their last 15 series at home with Saturday’s win. Edwin Encarnacion has been heating up and collected a pair of hits along with three RBI on Saturday and he has knocked in 14 runs over a span of eight games as the Yankees have opened up a 10-game lead in the division. Former Rockie D.J. LeMahieu went 3-for-4 on Saturday and is 11-for-31 during a seven-game hitting streak as the Yankees improved to 8-2 all-time at home against Colorado.

Pitchers: Rockies – German Marquez (8-5, 5.12 ERA) | Yankees – James Paxton (5-4, 3.94)

German Marquez was tagged for a career-high 11 runs in just 2.2 innings his last time out against San Francisco, but still leads the National League in innings pitched (130). He has a 8.26 ERA since the beginning of June and has allowed 59 hits – 10 home runs – in 44.2 innings during that stretch. This will be his first ever start against the Yankees.

James Paxton has been pitching much better of late but hasn’t been getting enough run support to post a victory. He’s allowed five runs total in his last three outings, but the Yankees scored seven total runs in that span and lost all three games. Paxton, who limited Tampa Bay to two runs over six innings on Monday, has a 3.52 ERA in three previous meetings with the Rockies.

This is a no-brainer here. Colorado’s season is spiraling out of control, while the Yankees bats have awaken after a brief slump. Marquez is in for another rough outing today and the Yankees will cruise behind an improving Paxton.
