Seattle, Washington

The NFC West race between the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers is shaping up to be a good one that could very well come down to a Week 17 showdown at CenturyLink Field. But before those teams face each other on Monday night November 11th in Week 10, the Seahawks need to concentrate on the high-scoring Baltimore Ravens this week in a game Seattle is coming in as 3-point favorites. The Seahawks got behind early last week in Cleveland before rallying for a 32-28 victory behind quarterback Russell Wilson, who boasts 14 touchdowns without an interception while completing 72.5 percent of his passes. Despite a 5-1 mark, Seattle’s point differential is only +21, while the 4-2 Ravens come in at +44 and lead the AFC North by two games. Quarterback Lamar Jackson is having a pretty good season of his own and has led the Ravens to No. 1 in the league in total offense (450.7 yards) and second in scoring (30.7 points). Jackson became the first quarterback in the Super Bowl era to throw for at least 200 yards and rush for at least 150 in last week’s 23-17 victory over winless Cincinnati. Seattle has won three in a row in the series including a 35-6 blowout as 10.5-point underdogs in 2015, as Wilson threw five touchdowns.

This game will feature the return of popular ex-Seahawk safety Earl Thomas, who spent nine years in Seattle and helped them win their only Super Bowl. The Ravens defense got a boost this week with the acquisition of veteran Marcus Peters from the Los Angeles Rams. The secondary ranks 25th in the league against the pass, allowing 269.5 yards a game and will be tested this week for sure. The Ravens easily have the top rushing offense in the NFL thanks to a team-leading 460 yards from Jackson, but Mark Engram has contributed 424 and a 4.9 average. The Ravens will go into their bye week before hosting New England on Sunday night.

While Wilson is leading the fifth-ranked total offense in the league, the defense is beginning to be a concern, allowing 20 points or more in five of the six games including 57 combined over the last two weeks. Defensive tackle Jarran Reed will return after a six-game abscence for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. He was second on the team with 10.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss last season. Running back Chris Carson has been getting stronger each game and had a season-best 124 yards on 24 carries last week in Cleveland including his second touchdown of the season. Seattle will be at Atlanta next Sunday.

This is the week I think Seattle’s defense finally steps up and will be helped by the 12th Man. The Ravens pass defense has all kinds of problems and Wilson will be able to exploit that. Baltimore’s four wins this season came against teams that are currently a combined 4-18. I think the Seahawks roll here.
