Nobody has been talking about the Detroit Tigers this season – and for good reason – but a couple of their players could be key pieces in trading for the future as the trade deadline looms. Two of the most notable trade pieces on this current roster are outfielder Nick Castellanos and Tuesday’s starting pitcher Matthew Boyd. The Tigers will showcase the two in front of some scouts when they open a two-game interleague set with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night. Detroit became the last team to reach 30 wins on Sunday when they salvaged the finale of a three-game set with the Toronto Blue Jays by posting a 4-3 win in 10 innings. Castellanos was the hero Sunday with a walk-off homer as the Tigers snapped a six-game losing streak with just their 13th win at home against 34 losses. The Phillies are fighting for a wild card spot and begin the week a half-game out of the race but did take two of three at in-state rival Pittsburgh over the weekend on Rhys Hoskins’ 11th-inning home run. Hoskins broke out of a 1-for-18 skid by going 2-for-4 but the team has been struggling to put together consistent offensive production. The Phillies have scored two runs or less in five of their last 10 games, while going 5-5 in that stretch. Philly will host first place Atlanta beginning Friday night when they open a nine-game homestand.

Pitchers: Phillies – Aaron Nola (8-2, 3.77 ERA) | Tigers – Matthew Boyd (6-8, 4.13)

Aaron Nola has been rounding into form since struggling early in the season and the Phillies have won four of his last five starts including a dramatic 7-6 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers last week. Nola did not have his best stuff in that contest, allowing four runs and five hits – three homers – in five innings without factoring in the decision. He had allowed a total of three runs in his previous four starts, but has also walked 13 batters in his last 25.2 innings. The Phillies are 2-0 when Nola faces the Tigers and he’s allowed three earned runs over 11.2 innings.

Boyd will be showcasing his stuff to everyone on Tuesday and he’s looking to get back on track after allowing four runs or more in each of his last six starts with the Tigers going 1-5 in that span. He was hit for five runs and six hits – two homers – over six innings in a loss at Cleveland last Thursday and will be seeing Philadelphia for the first time.

Boyd has no confidence right now and might be trying to impress other teams a little too much. This is a great opportunity for the Phillies offense to get back on track in these next two games and Nola should have no problem breezing through this Detroit lineup.
