The National League East got a little tighter on Tuesday, as the Philadelphia Phillies took the opener of a three-game series with the first place Atlanta Braves and will try and gain another game on Wednesday night. Ace Aaron Nola pitched eight shutout innings while allowing just four hits while striking out eight and Jay Bruce drove in both Philadelphia runs in the 2-0 victory. Since being acquired on June 2nd, Bruce has delivered seven home runs and 22 RBI in 23 games to help the Phillies pull within 4.5 games of the Braves. Catcher J.T Realmuto – the lone Phillies All-Star – left Sunday’s game at Miami with a left hamstring injury but started and finished 1-for-3 with a walk and a run scored to help give Philadelphia their sixth win in its past eight games after enduring a seven-game losing streak. The Braves were shutout for just the second time all season and failed to get the offense going against Nola after a terrific June in which they went 20-8 and averaged 6.7 runs. All-Star right fielder Nick Markakis had two of the Braves’ four hits in the series opener, and is batting .321 with 13 RBI and nine runs scored in his last 15 games. The Phillies are now 5-2 against the Braves this season and the series finale will be Thursday night.

Nick Pivetta hopes to feed off Nola’s gem last night and get back on track after allowing 14 runs on 24 hits with seven homers allowed in 17.2 innings over is last three ugly starts. The young righty had allowed one total run in his previous two starts against Cincinnati and the L.A. Dodgers and struck out 15 over as many innings and didn’t allow a homer. Pivetta has allowed eight hits and four runs in each of his two starts against Atlanta this season after surrendering eight runs total in five outings against them in 2018.

Bryse Wilson will make his third start of the season and he’s looking for better results than the first two. He made a start in the season-opening series against the Phillies on March 30th and allowed four runs, five hits, and four walks in 3.1 innings. His second start came last Thursday when the Chicago White Sox got him for six runs (four earned) on six hits with one walk and six strikeouts over 4.1 innings. Wilson had a 2.49 ERA in his eight starts at Triple-A Gwinnett with 49 strikeouts in 47 innings before being recalled last week.
Wilson may be pitching well in Triple-A, but he’s done nothing in his two big league starts this season including a bad outing against the Phillies back in March. Philly seems to have gathered some momentum again and I’ll take them as a dog tonight.
