First place in the National League East is on the line this weekend outside Atlanta, Georgia as the Braves play the Philadelphia Phillies for the first time since the end of March. Atlanta has used a seven-game winning streak to seize control of the division by 1.5 games over Philadelphia, who has lost eight of their last 13. The Braves took care of the Pittsburgh Pirates this week, sweeping them in four games and just can’t stop hitting. Atlanta has averaged seven runs per game while collecting 10 hits or more in six of those contests. Second baseman Ozzie Albies has three dingers, seven RBI, and eight runs scored during the winning streak while going 11-for-26. Ronald Acuna Jr. has hit safely in 14 of his last 16 games after recording two more hits in Atlanta’s 6-5 victory over the Pirates on Thursday. The Phillies were off Thursday, giving right fielder Bryce Harper two-days rest after sitting out in Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he did come up late in the game as a pinch-hitter. Harper, who homered twice in the opening series against the Braves, is batting .298 with four homers, nine doubles and 19 RBIs in his past 24 games. The Phillies hammered the Braves back in the opening series of the season, outscoring them 23-11 in the three-game sweep in Philadelphia. The Phils will play the next 26 games against NL East competition, while Atlanta plays 18 of its next 22 versus the division.

Pitchers: Phillies – Nick Pivetta (4-1, 4.93 ERA) | Braves – Max Fried (7-3, 3.75)

Nick Pivetta was sent down to the minors in the middle of April after struggling mightily, but has returned with a vengeance, especially the last two games. After surrendering three runs on three hits – two homers – in five innings versus St. Louis on May 28th, Pivetta has allowed just one run total in the last two. He pitched his first career complete game Saturday against Cincinnati, giving up one run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Pivetta allowed four runs on eight hits across 4.2 innings against Atlanta in his season debut March 30th.

The Phillies swept the Braves in the opening series back in March.

Max Fried has not been sharp recently, allowing 12 runs and 24 hits over his last three starts covering 15.2 innings, but Atlanta won two of those contests. In his last start against Miami, Fried gave up three runs on six hits with one walk and seven strikeouts over six innings in what was the best of his last three outings. He made two scoreless relief appearances against Philadelphia in the season’s opening series while walking two in 1.2 innings.

The Braves are the hotter team, but Philadelphia has the hotter pitcher going in the series opener. Pivetta has been sharp since returning from the minors and the day off should benefit the Phillies offense entering this big weekend series.
