Time: 7:10 ET | TV: SNY,

Opening Odds: San Diego -122/8

Everyone in the National League except the Miami Marlins are within striking distance of a wild card spot, but the San Diego Padres and New York Mets are slowly fading away. The two teams will look to make their move back up the standings when they face each other at Citi Field Tuesday night in the opener of a three-game series. The Padres avoided a three-game sweep with a 5-1 victory at the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and are just 2-9 since the All-Star Break. Hitting stars Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis, Jr. are doing their best to keep the offense going, as the team isn’t getting much from anyone else. Tatis has two homers and six RBI during a four-game hitting streak, while Machado has five homers and eight RBI in nine games since the break. The Mets began a nine-game road trip by going 4-1 to start, but dropped three of four over the weekend to the surging San Francisco Giants, with each of the losses coming by one run in extra innings. Outfielder Michael Conforto has hit safely in seven of his last eight games, but 1B Pete Alonso is mired in a 4-for-34 slump since winning the Home Run Derby. The Padres took two of three from the Mets at home back in early May.

Pitchers: Padres – Chris Paddack (6-4, 2.70 ERA) | Mets – Jason Vargas (4-5, 4.25)

The Padres are really treating Chris Paddack carefully, as he appears to be the ace of the future. The rookie right-hander has averaged about 90-95 pitches per outing and his starts are being spread out. He’s made four starts since June 22nd and has been extremely effective, allowing four runs total and just 11 hits in that span covering 24.1 innings. Paddack took a no-hitter into the eighth inning and allowing only a solo home run to beat Miami and extend his unbeaten streak to five starts last time out. He struck out 11 Mets in 7.2 scoreless innings back on May 6th.

Jason Vargas bounced back from a poor outing at Miami (six runs, five innings) to limit the Twins to three runs runs and five hits over six innings. The long ball has been a big problem for Vargas lately after allowing at least one in each of his last six starts – eight total. He allowed two home runs at San Diego on April 28th, 2018 en route to surrendering nine runs over 3.2 innings.

Paddack has been really tough to even get base hits off of lately and he’s already tamed the Mets in his only previous outing against them. The Padres aren’t playing well, but they should be able to get enough off Vargas to pull out a victory.
