A 14th-straight Big 12 regular season title is still in reach for the Kansas Jayhawks, but before a pivotal game against Texas Tech on Saturday, they have to get by Trae Young and the slumping Oklahoma Sooners on Monday night. The Jayhawks survive a tough contest at home on Saturday against West Virginia and move into a first-place tie atop the conference standings when Baylor knocked off the Red Raiders later that night. Kansas ended the game with a 19-3 run to put West Virginia away as Udoka Azubuike scored 21 points and Devonte’ Graham contributed 15 while the defense stifled the Mountaineers late. The win gave Kansas a 24th consecutive season with at least 10 conference victories. The fading Sooners dropped their fifth straight game Saturday, 76-66 to Texas, shooting a season-low 30.8% with Young continuing to struggle. The freshman guard scored 26 points but shot 7-of-21 from the field and is 18-for-58 over his last three games, including 4-of-27 from 3-point land. Kansas is 146-67 all-time against Oklahoma, but the Sooners got 26 points on just nine field-goal attempts from Young on January 23rd to post an 85-80 victory.

Young (29.0 points, 9.2 assists), who added seven assists and five rebounds against Texas, snapped a streak of 20 consecutive missed 3-pointers on Saturday and is averaging 23.6 points per game during the losing streak. Christian James, who averages 12.3 points a game, was held to 11 after scoring at least 20 in his previous two games and Brady Manek (11.0 points) was just 3-of-13 from the field after entering the game shooting 61.7% at home. The Sooners are still a five-seed in the latest NCAA Tournament projections, but they were once a top 5 team in the country. Oklahoma will host Kansas State on Saturday.

Oklahoma have covered the spread in each of the last 3 meetings.

Azubuike (14.1 points, 7.0 rebounds) made 7-of-8 shots from the field against West Virginia to lift his shooting percentage to 76.9%, and he also drained 7-of-10 from the free-throw line to raise his season percentage to 44.7%. Azubuike is shooting 78% from the field in Big 12 play, but he’s upped that to 86% over his last six games. Lagerald Vick (12.8 points) has scored 29 points in his last two games after after reaching double figures in four of his previous 12. Graham has now played 40 minutes in 10 straight games as four starters average over 30 minutes a contest.

NCAA BASKETBALL GAME LINES

Teams have figured out how to slow down Young and it’s hurting the Sooners as they really have no other deadly scoring options. The Jayhawks are getting better as the season progresses and should be able to handle Oklahoma here.
