The Washington Nationals have a long way to go, but they are starting to play like one of the preseason favorites in the National League East and will begin a six-game road trip with the first of four against the reeling San Diego Padres on Thursday. Washington swept the Chicago White Sox in a brief two-game homestand and have won four in a row and nine of their last 11 to get within five games of the .500 mark. Trea Turner blasted his third career walk-off homer in Wednesday’s 6-4 victory over the White Sox and the Nationals are averaging 6.7 runs in their last 11 games to get within 6.5 games of first place Philadelphia. Third baseman Anthony Rendon has been the most consistent hitter all season and extended his on-base streak to 21 straight games Wednesday. The Padres are trending in the opposite direction with losses in seven of its last 10 games but should finally have star rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. back in the lineup for the series opener. Tatis was a big part of San Diego’s early season success but has been out since April 28 with a strained left hamstring. The Padres lost 7-5 to Philadelphia on Wednesday but outfielder Wil Myers went 2-for-4 with a double and solo homer, showing signs he may be breaking out of a long slump.

Pitchers: Nationals – Patrick Corbin (5-3, 3.46 ERA) | Padres – Joey Lucchesi (4-3, 3.96)

Patrick Corbin followed-up a four-hit shutout against the Miami Marlins with his worst outing of the season when the Cincinnati Reds tagged him for eight runs (six earned) over 2.2 innings in a 9-3 loss on Friday. Corbin has a 4.96 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in six road starts and the Nationals are 3-3 in those contests. He is 6-7 with a 4.24 ERA in 19 career games (14 starts) versus San Diego, but this will be Corbin’s first start against them as a member of the Nationals.

The Padres took two of three in Washington at the end of April.

Joey Lucchesi recorded a season-high 11 strikeouts in his last outing Friday against the Marlins, winning for the first time since April 21st after allowing one run in 6.1 innings. Lucchesi has a 2.61 ERA in seven home starts and the Padres have won four of those but only one of the last three. He was hit hard at Washington in late April, allowing five runs (four earned) over four innings in a no-decision.

I’m going to have to jump on the Nationals bandwagon for the way their playing lately and they’ve won four of their last five road games as well. The Padres are in a funk and the return of Tatis might not even help.
