The Washington Nationals will conclude their nine-game road trip with the first of three at Dodger Stadium on Monday night as they take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Nats started the trek with a three-game sweep in San Francisco, then scored 28 runs over the weekend while taking two of three from Oakland. Bryce Harper returned from his three-game suspension on Sunday and drew three walks and scored twice as Washington held on to defeat Oakland 11-10 victory. Ryan Zimmerman continued his Triple Crown bid by going 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBIs, lifting his season numbers to an MLB-best .374 average, 16 homers (tied for first in the NL) and an MLB-high 48 RBIs. Second baseman Daniel Murphy is also enjoying the California trek, going 14-for-28 with a homer, seven RBIs and five runs scored. The Dodgers are tied with Arizona for the best home record in the majors (21-8) and – like the Nationals – have won eight of their last 11 overall. The failed to complete a three-game weekend sweep in Milwaukee and collected just three hits on Sunday. Los Angeles won five of its regular-season meetings with Washington a year ago and rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the NL Division Series to eliminate the Nationals. Dodgers’ closer Kenley Jansen has struck out 40 of the 85 batters he has faced and already owns the major-league record for the most strikeouts to begin a season without issuing a walk.

Pitchers: Nationals – Gio Gonzalez (4-1, 3.03 ERA) | Dodgers – Hyun-Jin Ryu (2-5, 3.91)

Despite a 4-1 record and ERA just above three, Gio Gonzalez has been struggling with his control. In his last outing on Tuesday, he allowed three runs on eight hits while walking three in 6.1 innings at San Francisco. Gonzalez, who last pitched in Dodger Stadium in Game 3 of the 2016 NLDS, is tied with Colorado’s Tyler Chatwood for the major-league lead with 35 base on balls. Adrian Gonzalez (2-for-17) and Yasiel Puig (1-for-11) have struggled against Gonzalez, who is 3-1 with a 1.69 ERA in five career regular-season starts versus the Dodgers.

Hyun-Jin Ryu will make his ninth start of the season and has been giving up the long-ball at a career-high rate. Ryu missed all but one start of last season with an injury and is working his way back this season. He allowed eight home runs in 26 starts in 2015 and has already matched that total in eight starts this season. He’s coming off a no-decision at St. Louis on Wednesday, allowing one run on three hits and a walk while throwing 77 pitches over six innings. Ryu picked up his first career save six days earlier with four scoreless innings and earned his last victory on May 18th, when he gave up two runs over 5.1 innings against Miami. Ryu is 2-1 with a 3.05 ERA in four home appearances (three starts) this year as he enters his first career start versus Washington.

The Dodgers have won seven times in the last ten games, but are only hitting .218 as a team during that stretch. They tend to struggle against lefties, hitting only .242 against them, while the Nationals are batting .278 against a southpaw. Look for Gonzalez to be sharp and for the Nationals to take the opener.
