Opening Odds: New York -134/9

We backed Jacob deGrom and the Mets on Friday as our top play on our free MLB picks page and we’ll go ahead and try this matchup again. New York visits the Cincinnati Reds for the middle-game of their three-game set looking to improve on their wild card standing in the National League with just over a week to go. Teams ahead of the Mets – Washington and Milwaukee – keep winning, but New York has now won three straight to stay within 3.5 games of a potential postseason berth. After this weekend, the Mets will play their remaining seven games at home against last place Miami and already-clinched Atlanta. Pete Alonso blasted his 50th homer on Friday and is just three away from breaking the rookie mark set two seasons ago by Aaron Judge, while Michael Conforto broke an 0-for-18 skid with an RBI single in the ninth inning. The Reds could do little against deGrom in Friday’s 8-1 setback, getting their only run on a Aristides Aquino homer (17th) in the ninth inning. Cincinnati, who have won two straight series against wild card-contenders, will try to even the series with Anthony DeSclafani opposing Zack Wheeler.

Pitchers: Mets – Zack Wheeler (11-7, 4.09 ERA) | Reds – Anthony DeSclafani (9-9, 3.93)

Wheeler has been on absolute fire since a rough stretch in August, posting four-straight one-run outings against teams with winning records. He allowed one run on six hits while striking out nine over seven innings against the NL-best Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday in a no-decision. Wheeler had an early-season outing against the Reds and surrendered four runs in six innings while walking three. He’s allowed two total runs in 12 innings in two starts at Great American Ballpark.

DeSclafani has been up and down all season but is coming off two quality starts – both against Arizona – allowing just one hit and one run over seven strong innings on Saturday, but the Reds lost 1-0. After allowing 17 runs (14 earned) in his first three starts against the Mets, DeSclafani limited them to three hits and striking out eight across 5.2 scoreless innings back on May 1st.

Just like last night, I’m going with the Mets again mainly because of the pitching matchup. Wheeler has been outstanding lately, while DeSclafani has been a little inconsistent. The Mets are getting hot again and I’ll ride them once again.
