The New York Giants will look to get their sputtering offense going with or without star wideout Odell Beckham, Jr. on Monday night as they host the Detroit Lions in a Week 2 clash at MetLife Stadium. The Giants managed just two first downs in the first half of last week’s 19-3 loss at Dallas as the New York offense has failed to eclipse 20 points in seven consecutive games. Beckham was limited in practice last week and has been upgraded to probable for Monday’s contest. While the Giants struggled to score last week, Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford overcame an early pick-six and threw for 292 yards and four touchdown passes in a 35-23 victory over Arizona in Week 1. Signed to a five-year, $135 million contract extension, Stafford completed 70.7% of his passes last week – well above both the averages of last season (65.3) and his career (61.6). New York will celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Super Bowl XLII championship team at halftime.

While Golden Tate hauled in team highs in catches (10) and receiving yards (107) last week, it was rookie Kenny Golladay who made the biggest impression with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdown catches. Running back Theo Riddick also had six catches with a TD reception, but his rushing contribution, when added with those of Ameer Abdullah and Dwayne Washington, resulted in just 51 yards on 22 carries for a 2.3-yard average per attempt. Expect to see Stafford fling it through the air at least 40 times tonight and test the Giants secondary. Three different Lions picked-off Carson Palmer last week, while linebacker Jarrad Davis led the team with nine tackles. Detroit will host Atlanta next week before going to Minnesota for their first division game.

New York doesn’t have much of a running game either, as Paul Perkins accounted for 16 of the team’s 35 yards rushing in the season opener. Running back Shane Vereen did not record a carry but did provide Manning with a serviceable option out of the backfield by grabbing a team-high nine receptions. Second-year wide receiver Sterling Shepard, who had seven catches last week, joined Beckham in catching a touchdown reception in New York’s 17-6 win over Detroit on December 18th. Veteran Brandon Marshall struggled to step up in Beckham’s absence last week as he had just one catch for 10 yards in his debut with his new team. The defense actually did a pretty good job last week considering Dallas had the ball for over 34 minutes. They held the explosive Cowboys offense to just one touchdown as defensive Olivier Vernon had a sack to increase his total to 8.5 in his last 10 games.

I really think Beckham is going to play in this one, but how effective will he be? The Giants shut down Stafford and company last December and really do have one of the best defenses in the league. I expect a tight game throughout, because I don’t have much confidence in the Giants offense even with Beckham playing. I’ll take the points in this one.
