The Los Angeles Lakers and Philadelphia 76ers both entered last week’s trade deadline with hopes of improving their squads and making a strong run in the postseason, but only one of them made a splash. The Los Angeles Lakers offered everything but LeBron James and their logo to New Orleans in order to get superstar Anthony Davis, but a deal never came through. The Lakers will now take what they have and hope to climb back into the top eight of the Western Conference standings. They came out after the deadline and erased an 18-point deficit in shocking the Boston Celtics on the road Thursday while getting big games from Brandon Ingram and Kyle Kuzma. The 76ers landed several new players, acquiring Tobias Harris from the Los Angeles Clippers in one deal and improving the team’s bench in another with veteran wings James Ennis and Jonathon Simmons. Harris made his debut on Friday night and recorded 14 points and eight rebounds as Philadelphia improved to 22-6 at home with a 117-110 victory over the Denver Nuggets. The road team has the last five meetings, with Philadelphia taking the latest one in L.A. 121-105 a couple of weeks ago.

The Lakers are 1.5 games behind their Staples Center mates the Los Angeles Clippers for the No. 8 seed out West with 27 games remaining. James’ 28 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists Thursday took a backseat to the buzzer-beater thrown in by veteran Rajon Rondo, who finished with 17 points and 10 assists. Los Angeles had only seven players score points – all double-digits – and received a combined 31 off the bench from Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Lance Stephenson – his fourth straight double-digit scoring output. The Lakers conclude their six-game road trip in Atlanta on Tuesday.

Experts have tabbed Philadelphia’s starting five of JJ Redick, Harris, Jimmy Butler and All-Stars Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid as the best in the league now behind Golden State. Redick had a huge game on Friday with a season-high 34 points including 6-of-7 from three-point range and is averaging 18.6 on the season. Jonathon Simmons, who averaged 6.9 points and 2.4 rebounds for Orlando this season, is expected to make his Philadelphia debut on Sunday.

Philly has covered 3 of the last 4 meetings with the Lakers.

Embiid is battling an illness and may not play on Sunday, but that won’t matter with the scoring that Philly has now. Many books have this game OFF the board but you can grab -7 at Bovada as of Saturday night.
