The well-rested Washington Wizards return to action on Wednesday when they host the free-falling Utah Jazz at Capital One Arena in the Nation’s Capital. The Wizards were on a four-game winning streak before opening a five-game homestand on Saturday and fading down the stretch on the second night of a back-to-back and lost to the Milwaukee Bucks 110-103. The Wizards will have had three-full days rest in preparation for a Utah team that is really struggling. Washington was outscored 28-18 in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s setback to the Bucks, but are still atop the Southeast Division by half-game over the Miami Heat heading into Tuesday’s action. On December 4th, the Jazz recorded their most impressive win of the season in a 116-69 thrashing of the Wizards in Salt Lake City. Since then, the Jazz have dropped 13 of their last 16 games and might be coming off the most crushing defeat – a 103-102 loss at Miami on Sunday in which they gave up the go-ahead layup with 5.1 seconds left and held an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter. Utah took each of the last four in the series and held Washington to 93 points or fewer in each of those wins.

Rookie guard Donovan Mitchell has shown flashes of brilliance in his first pro season, scoring 27 points on Sunday, but showed his inexperience when he hoisted up a jumper on the final possession Sunday instead of finding the open man. Mitchell is averaging 23.8 points over the last four games to boost his season average to an NBA rookie-best 18.5. Thabo Sefolosha added 13 points against the Heat and has scored in double figures in each of his last five games to boost his season average to 8.4 points per contest. Rodney Hood has bounced back from a 1-for-10 shooting night versus New Orleans on January 3rd with 29 points on 12-of-25 shooting over the last two games. The Jazz will wrap-up their four-game road trip with a visit to Charlotte on Friday.

The Jazz have covered the spread in the last 4 meetings.

The Washington backcourt tandem of John Wall and Bradley Beal should have big games against the young Jazz squad, but both are going through some shooting woes. Wall shot just 5-of-19 from the floor on Saturday but handed out a season-high 16 assists in his fifth double-double over the last 10 games. Beal is averaging 28.2 points over the last five games and scored at least 20 points in each of the last seven contests, but he went 1-of-7 from 3-point range on Saturday. Beal had connected on 17-of-33 from beyond the arc in the prior four games. Small forward Otto Porter Jr. (back) sat out Saturday and is questionable for Wednesday’s contest.

NBA SCORES – ODDS – PUBLIC PLAYS

Look for the Wizards to get a bit of revenge on the struggling Jazz after being embarrassed by them last month. I expect Wall and Beal to have huge games and turn this game into a route.
