The Los Angeles Lakers have rebounded from an opening night loss to the L.A. Clippers by using solid defense and strong bench play and will seek a third straight win when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night. Anthony Davis recorded 29 points and 14 rebounds in Sunday’s easy 120-101 home victory over the Charlotte Hornets, while LeBron James added 20 points and 12 assists for his second straight double-digit assist effort. The Lakers held the Utah Jazz to 41.4 percent shooting in Friday’s 95-86 win and the bench played a big part in Sunday’s victory. Veteran center Dwight Howard led three reserves in double-figures with 16 points (8-of-8) while also grabbing 10 boards and point guard Quinn Cook added 12 points and eight assists. The Grizzlies got their first win of the season on Sunday with a 134-133 overtime thriller versus the Brooklyn Nets and got a glimpse of the future. No. 2 overall draft pick Ja Morant, had the best game of his young career Sunday when he exploded for 30 points and nine assists Sunday after struggling in his first two outings. Morant made 13-of-22 shots in Sunday’s win after hitting just 9-of-21 over his first two games. Memphis took two of the three meetings with the Lakers last season including a 107-99 triumph at Staples Center.

The young Grizzlies team struggled with their long range shooting in dropping their first two games of the season to Miami and Chicago, but converted 14-of-33 from 3-point range against Brooklyn. The final three-pointer came as time expired from veteran forward Jae Crowder to seal Memphis’ first victory. Forward Dillon Brooks – in his second season out of Oregon – was 9-of-15 shooting while recording a season-high 21 points and center Jonas Valanciunas had 16 points and 11 rebounds for his second straight double-double. The defense needs to get better, as the Grizzlies rank 25th in points allowed at 121.0. Memphis will come home for three games beginning Saturday against the Phoenix Suns.

The Lakers are still looking to get a full roster going soon, as forward Kyle Kuzma (foot) and point guard Rajon Rondo (calf) will both likely miss their fourth consecutive games. As long as you have the duo of Davis and James on the court, however, this team will always have a chance to win and that is why they are 12-point favorites in Tuesday’s contest. Davis scored 25 of his points in the first half on Sunday and his 10-of-19 overall shooting was his best of the season thus far. The Lakers will venture away from Staples Center for the first time this season when they begin a three-game road trip in Dallas on Friday night.

The Lakers are starting to find their rhythm with Davis and James leading the way and the defense is playing well also. This Memphis team is no match for L.A. on the road and I say the Lakers roll here. Lay the points.
