The Colorado Rockies have fallen off a cliff and buried themselves into the basement of the National League West, but are still only 7.5 games out of a playoff spot. With the calendar turning to August, the Rockies need to pick it up immediately starting this weekend against wild card-contender San Francisco at Coors Field. Colorado was 42-38 after taking two of three from the Giants in late June, but have gone 8-21 since including an ugly four-game sweep at the hands of San Francisco at home just a few weeks ago. The Giants scored 40 runs in that sweep en route to a 19-6 record in July to put themselves in the thick of the wild card chase. Their streak of seven straight series wins came to an end this week in Philadelphia as the Phillies took two of three including a 10-2 thumping on Thursday. Mike Yastrzemski had two hits for San Francisco and is 10-for-21 during a five-game hitting streak. Brandon Crawford jammed his shoulder in Thursday’s loss and may not play on Friday. Nolan Arenado has five RBI during a six-game hitting streak for Colorado, while David Dahl is riding a nine-game streak.

Pitchers: Giants – Shaun Anderson (3-3, 5.06 ERA) | Rockies – Peter Lambert (2-2, 5.67)

Shaun Anderson doesn’t have a lot of momentum coming into this weekend’s series after getting knocked around in each of his last five starts, but the Giants’ offense has bailed him out by winning four of those contests. Anderson allowed four runs and seven hits over five innings in a loss at San Diego on Saturday and hasn’t pitched beyond five innings in his last five outings. He faced Colorado back on July 17th at Coors Field and allowed five runs and eight hits over 4.1 innings.

Pete Lambert has been slightly better than Anderson, but the Rockies have lost each of his last seven starts including a 3-2 loss at Cincinnati on Sunday in which he allowed two runs over five innings. Lambert, who has a 7.61 ERA at home, allowed two runs over six innings against the Giants back on July 16th.

I know the Rockies have been cold and San Fran is playing well, but I’m going with Colorado in this one. They have a slight pitching edge and the offense is still explosive at home.
