The battle for the National League Wild Card spots will surely go down to the last week of the season, if not the last day, so every game is huge. The Philadelphia Phillies got the better of the red-hot San Francisco Giants on Tuesday to temporarily grab a tie for the second wild card spot with Milwaukee lurking close behind. The Giants are 2.5 games back and couldn’t get the offense going in the series opener at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday, collecting just six hits in the 4-2 setback. Brandon Belt snapped an 0-for-17 skid with a pinch-hit solo homer and will return to the starting lineup on Wednesday against Phillies right-hander Vince Velasquez. While the Giants lost for just the sixth time in 25 games, Philadelphia is 5-2 on their last seven games thanks to the red-hot Rhys Hoskins, who went deep in his second straight game and increased his team-leading total to 23 homers on Tuesday with a two-run shot in the fifth inning. Hoskins has nine hits to go along with seven RBI and four runs scored during the Phillies’ last seven games. Rookie OF Adam Haseley has seven hits in his last four games after recording two on Tuesday. The teams will wrap-up their three-game series on Thursday and play four more in San Francisco next week.

Jeff Samardzija has been horrible in his career against the Phillies, but is coming in with some momentum after posting a 3-1 mark with a 2.48 ERA in five starts this month. The veteran righty followed up a poor outing against the Mets with six innings of one-run ball at San Diego Friday. Samardzija is 2-5 with an 8.51 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 12 career appearances (six starts) versus Philadelphia.

Velasquez had one of his better outings of the season last time out after getting knocked around by the Dodgers in his previous start. In last Tuesday’s game at Detroit, Velasquez allowed four hits while striking out nine in 5.2 scoreless innings of a 4-0 victory. He is 0-1 with a 4.15 ERA in four home starts while allowing seven home runs in just 21.2 innings there.
Velasquez was very impressive at Detroit last week and even though this Giants team is hot, they still don’t have a very potent offense. Look for Velasquez to keep the ball in the park for a change, while the Phillies offense feats on Samardzija. San Francisco is 0-7 in their last seven games at Citizens Bank Park.
