Dodgers vs Red Sox Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [7/14/19]

LA Dodgers (61-33) at Boston (50-42)
When: Sunday, July 14th, 2019
Where: Fenway Park,
Boston, MA
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: Boston -105/9

The majors ERA leader will matchup against one of the hottest pitchers around when the Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox conclude their three-game interleague series on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball. All-Star pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu has a minuscule 1.73 ERA this season and will try to exact some revenge against David Price, who beat him in Game 2 of the World Series last October. The Dodgers snapped a four-game losing streak on Saturday with a convincing 11-2 triumph over Boston after dropping the series opener on Friday 8-1. Cody Bellinger launched his 31st home run of the season – a 430 foot shot off knuckle-baller Steven Wright – to tie him with Christian Yelich for the major league lead. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Red Sox, who trail Oakland by 1.5 games for the second AL Wild Card spot. Shortstop Xander Bogaerts homered in each of the first two games of the series for Boston and has scored at least one run in five straight games. The Red Sox bolstered their starting rotation on Saturday by acquiring RHP Andrew Cashner from the Baltimore Orioles in exchange for a pair of minor leaguers.

Pitchers: Dodgers – Hyun-Jin Ryu (10-2, 1.73 ERA) | Red Sox – David Price (7-2, 3.24)

Ryu’s brilliant first half was rewarded with a start for the National League in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in which he allowed one hit in a scoreless inning before handing the ball off to teammate Clayton Kershaw. His last regular season start came on July 4th against San Diego and he logged six scoreless innings in a win. Ryu allowed four runs and six hits over 4.2 innings at Fenway Park in Game 2 of the World Series last Fall.

Price allowed two runs in six innings in that Game 2 versus Ryu in October, then picked up the victory in the Game 5 clincher while allowing one run and three hits in seven innings. Price’s last start came on July 7th at Detroit when he allowed one run and four hits, but needed 99 pitches to get through five innings. Price is 3-1 at home with a 3.06 ERA in six starts and the Red Sox are 4-2 in those outings.

After some frustrating performances at Fenway Park, the Dodgers offense finally busted out on Saturday and should give them some confidence heading into Sunday’s matchup. I’m giving the slight edge to Ryu in this one in what should be a close contest.
