The St. Louis Cardinals gained an extra half-game on the Milwaukee Brewers by taking two games on Friday night in New York, as the finished-off the Mets from Thursday’s suspended game, then went back-and-forth before pulling away late in the nightcap. The Cardinals are the team that just doesn’t go away and are only 3.5 back of first place in the National League Central after victories of 5-4 and 9-5. Paul DeJong drove in the go-ahead run in the 10th inning to finish off the suspended game and blasted the tying homer in the next contest before Dexter Fowler added a three-run homer and Kolten Wong ended the scoring with a solo homer. All three of those homers came in the final two innings as the Mets blew their major league-leading 16th save and have allowed a total of 30 runs in losing three of their last four. New York is hoping to get some length from Noah Syndergaard, who will be opposed by fellow right-hander Michael Wacha. The Mets stayed ahead of Washington for third place in the NL East and are 7.5 back of first place Atlanta.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Michael Wacha (4-2, 5.63 ERA) | Mets – Noah Syndergaard (4-4, 4.45)

Wacha is having a horrible season and was demoted to the bullpen after surrendering seven runs – six earned – and seven hits in a home loss to Kansas City on May 22nd, only to get rocked in his first relief appearance. He gave up six runs and seven hits – including three homers – in just one inning at Philadelphia seven days later, then pitched 2.1 scoreless innings versus Cincinnati. He was summoned back into the rotation and responded with six scoreless innings at Miami, while striking out four and allowing five hits along with two walks in his longest outing since April 17th. Wacha earned his only career complete game – and shutout – at Citi Field in July of 2017 when he allowed just three hits and struck out eight.

The Cardinals are 4-1 against the Mets this season.

Syndergaard has strung together three-straight quality starts after getting tagged for six runs and 10 hits over 5.1 innings versus the Detroit Tigers on May 24th. He is coming off a solid start against Colorado on Sunday, allowing one hit while striking out seven and walking two over seven scoreless innings to even his record at 4-4. Syndergaard was hit hard at St. Louis on April 21st, allowing six runs – four earned – and eight hits over five innings in a 6-4 setback.

The Cardinals are starting to gain some confidence back and so is Wacha, who responded to his bullpen demotion with a solid outing last time out. Syndergaard doesn’t have All-Star-type stuff this season and the Mets are just 1-4 when he starts against the Cardinals in his career. I’ll take the better team here.
