Cardinals vs Diamondbacks Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [9/23/19]

St Louis (89-67) at Arizona (80-76)
When: Monday, September 23, 2019
Where: Chase Field,
Phoenix, Arizona
Time: 9:40 ET | TV: FS Midwest/Arizona
Opening Odds: St Louis -120/9.5

The St. Louis Cardinals’ run towards a postseason is complete and now all that’s left to do is finish off the division. The Red Birds just completed their first four-game sweep at Wrigley Field since 1921 to clinch a playoff spot and and the same time, nearly eliminate their long-time rivals the Chicago Cubs. St. Louis will try and keep the momentum going when they embark on a short three-game road trip at the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. Paul Goldschmidt, who had the decisive RBI in Sunday’s 3-2 win for the Cardinals, will make his first visit back to Arizona where he was a six-time All Star. Goldschmidt is a .289 hitter with 99 home runs in 546 career games at Arizona’s Chase Field. The Diamondbacks were dealt a blow to their postseason chances on Sunday when they failed to hold an early 4-0 lead in losing 6-4 at the San Diego Padres. Arizona now sits six games back with six to play, meaning, they have to win out and get a lot of help. Arizona has 213 home runs, third most in club history behind the 2017 (220) and 1999 (216) teams.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (13-9, 3.83 ERA) | Diamondbacks – Alex Young (7-4, 3.27)

Veteran Adam Wainwright is heading back to the postseason and will get two more starts to fine-tune his game – as if he needs it. St. Louis has won 12 of his last 14 starts and he’s allowed just two runs over his last 27 innings. The Cardinals took two of three from Arizona at home back in July and Wainwright won his start by pitching seven scoreless innings while striking out seven. He is 9-5 with a 2.70 ERA in his career against them.

Young followed up his best and longest outing of the season with two duds against the Mets and Marlins, allowing eight runs (two earned) and 10 hits with six walks in 7.2 innings in his last two starts. He shutout the Reds for eight innings while striking out 12 in his previous start, but lack of control got the better of him with five walks against Miami last time out. He will be facing the Cardinals for the first time.

You have two different emotions in this game. The Cardinals will try and come down from an amazing weekend in which they won all four games by one run, while Arizona tries to pick themselves up and finish the season strong, knowing they are all but eliminated. I think the Cardinals’ emotion wins out here, because they are a veteran club that knows they still need to lock-down the NL Central and avoid a wild card game.
