The Milwaukee Brewers return home to begin a six-game homestand when they entertain the St. Louis Cardinals for the first of a two-game set Tuesday night at Miller Park. The Brewers are back to their winning ways like the beginning of the season and still within range of first-place Chicago in the NL Central, two games behind. They are also making up ground in the Wild Card race by winning nine of their last 13, just 3.5 games behind Colorado. Domingo Santana had his second multi-hit performance in four games in Sunday’s 3-2 victory over the sizzling Los Angeles Dodgers, but is just 10-for-49 with 18 strikeouts this season versus St. Louis. Star slugger Ryan Braun had a tough weekend in Los Angeles and is 0-for-13 with three strikeouts in his last four games. While the Brewers are climbing back into the playoff picture, the Cardinals are starting to fade out of that picture with losses in nine of 13 overall to sit 4.5 games behind the first-place Cubs. Matt Carpenter mashed a solo homer in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay and looks to continue his hot streak this season versus Milwaukee. He is batting .326 with three homers, six RBIs and 10 runs scored against the Brew Crew. St. Louis is just 28-34 away from Busch Stadium as it begins a 10-game road trip on Tuesday. 2B Kolten Wong brings a 10-game hitting streak into Tuesday’s contest and is batting .435 with 11 RBIs this season against Milwaukee.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Luke Weaver (2-1, 2.31 ERA) | Brewers – Matt Garza (6-7, 4.67)

This will be Luke Weaver’s seventh appearance of the season (4th start) and stepped in for the injured Adam Wainwright on Wednesday, striking out a career high-tying 10 and allowing just three hits over seven scoreless innings in a 6-2 victory over San Diego. It was Weaver’s second big league victory and his first came in Miller Park on August 2nd when he allowed two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts over 6.1 innings to earn the victory.

Matt Garza bounced back from three horrible outings with a solid effort in San Francisco last time out despite earning a no-decision for his efforts. He allowed just one run on five hits in as many innings last Wednesday. In his previous three outings, Garza allowed 20 runs total in 13 innings while allowing a staggering eight home runs. Garza has received better results in a pair of starts versus St. Louis this season, posting a 2-0 mark with a 4.22 ERA.

Garza has not been good and I’m not taking anything from his outing against the lowly Giants. Weaver has been a pleasant surprise for the Cardinals thus far and I believe he pitches well enough to get the Cardinals back in the win column.

Pick: Cardinals -122
