Opening Odds: Atlanta -122/9.5

The Atlanta Braves are back over .500 thanks to winning four of their past five games and they’re doing with help from their impressive young talent. Atlanta got a home run from rookie Austin Riley in his first ever Big League game and another strong pitching performance from Mike Soroka in evening up their three-game series with the St. Louis Cardinals with a 4-0 win on Wednesday. The 21-year-old Soroka picked up his fourth win with seven shutout innings and lowered his ERA to 0.98 in six starts. Riley, who was promoted from Triple-A Gwinnett earlier Wednesday after outfielder Ender Inciarte landed on the injured list with a lumbar strain in his back, finished 1-for-3 with a 438-foot homer leading off the fourth inning. The Cardinals took the opener of the series 14-3, but were limited to three hits in losing for the 10th time in its past 13 games and drop 3.5 games behind the first place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. Third baseman Matt Carpenter is having a horrible season to date, hitting just .199 after going 0-for-2 with a walk Wednesday. His hitting .115 in his past eight games with six strikeouts and one extra-base hit. Shortstop Paul DeJong recorded one of St. Louis’ three hits and his now batting .400 in eight career games against the Braves. Second baseman Kolten Wong is hitting .344 with five homers, 15 RBIs and 10 walks in 20 road games this season.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Adam Wainwright (3-3, 4.15 ERA) | Braves – Julio Teheran (2-4, 4.26)

Adam Wainwright is having a nice comeback season from a injury-shortened 2018 and will surpass his start total on Thursday with his ninth of the season. The 37-year-old has not been as effective on the road, going 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA in four starts and is coming off a no-decision Friday against Pittsburgh despite not walking a hitter and allowing only one run on five hits with eight strikeouts in a season-best seven innings. Wainwright is 9-3 with a 3.29 ERA and 1.28 WHIP in 18 career games (13 starts) against Atlanta.

Julio Teheran has made six of his nine starts away from home and has pitched well in two of the three home outings this season. He’s coming off his second straight no-decision, giving up just one run on five hits with eight strikeouts and four walks in 12 innings against Miami and Arizona. He was tagged for four runs – including three homers – versus San Diego in his last home start on April 30th, but allowed two runs total in his previous two outings at SunTrust Park spanning 11 innings. Teheran is 2-3 in six lifetime starts against St. Louis with a 3.18 ERA.

The over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.

I think we all know this Atlanta team was not a sub-.500 squad and they are starting to gather some momentum, while the Cardinals are going backwards. Wainwright has not been good on the road this season and the Braves will be ready to pounce on him Thursday and win the three-game series.
