St Louis (58-50) at Oakland (62-48)
When: Saturday, August 3rd, 2019
Where: Oakland Coliseum,
Oakland, CA
Time: 9:07 ET | TV: MLB Network
Opening Odds: Oakland -135/9

Both the St. Louis Cardinals and Oakland A’s got a rare Friday off day in preparation for their key interleague matchup this weekend at the Oakland Coliseum beginning Saturday night. The Cardinals have a big series at the Los Angeles Dodgers after these two games in Oakland, but can’t take the A’s lightly, who are right in the thick of the AL Wild Card chase. St. Louis seized first place in the National League Central by beating the Chicago Cubs two out of three this week and have a one-game lead entering Friday’s action. Matt Wieters provided a three-run homer in Thursday’s 8-0 victory over the Cubs to help back a brilliant outing by Jack Flaherty, who allowed one hit in seven scoreless innings. Oakland has a pivotal schedule coming up as well after their battle with St. Louis. The A’s, who are a half-game behind Tampa Bay for the second wild card in the American League, play at Wrigley Field next week against the Cubs as part of their eight-game road trip. They will then return home to face first place Houston who leads them by eight games in the AL West. The A’s rallied past the Brewers on Thursday thanks to a two-run eighth inning home run by third baseman Matt Chapman. Oakland took both games in St. Louis earlier in the year and have won four straight in the series and seven of the last nine.

Pitchers: Cardinals – Dakota Hudson (10-5, 3.88 ERA) | Athletics – Mike Fiers (9-3, 3.54)

Dakota Hudson has a 1.54 WHIP and has allowed 19 home runs, but his ERA is still under 4.00 and the Cardinals are 14-7 when he starts. He lost for the first time since June 29th when he gave up five runs in four innings at Houston on Sunday. Hudson, who allowed three or fewer earned runs in each of his previous 17 starts, carries a 4.24 interleague ERA in three outings.

Mike Fiers has not lost a game since May 1st, covering 15 outings since then, beginning with his no-hitter against Cincinnati on May 7th. He allowed just two run over six innings Sunday against Texas while serving-up two home runs in Oakland’s 6-5 win. Fiers has owned the Cardinals in his career, posting a 1.45 ERA in seven starts but hasn’t faced them in four years.

You might not realize it, but this is a pretty good pitching matchup here involving a couple of underrated hurlers. I’m giving the slight edge to the A’s here being at home where Fiers is 6-2 and is 7-1 with a 2.76 ERA in night games. Plus, he hasn’t lost in three months.
