The Milwaukee Brewers had a tough time at the plate on Wednesday against Justin Verlander and the Astros bullpen, striking out 24 times, but managed to get the timely hits in a 6-3 victory in 14 innings. Milwaukee blasted seven home runs in a two-game interleague split with Houston to say just ahead of the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central. Verlander struck out 15 in seven innings, but the Brewers collected three homers off the ace including a game-tying blast from Eric Thames in the seventh inning. Mike Moustakas capped the scoring with a two-run blast in the 14th inning, to help his team earn the split to begin an eight-game road trip. The majors home run leader, Christian Yelich, has now hit safely in each of the last 10 games to lift his batting average to .345. While Milwaukee leads the NL with 121 home runs, the Giants are sitting in 14th place with 60 and are sitting in last place in the NL West despite sweeping a two-game set from the San Diego Padres this week. The Brewers homer barrage could continue tonight against San Francisco left-hander Drew Pomeranz, who has surrendered 11 home runs in as many starts. He will be opposed by the undefeated Zach Davies.

Pitchers: Brewers – Zach Davies (7-0, 2.41 ERA) | Giants – Drew Pomeranz (1-6, 7.16)

Davies kept his perfect record in tact on Saturday by earning his seventh win of the season when he held Pittsburgh to three runs and seven hits – one homer – over five innings. Davies, who is almost a lock for the All-Star Game next month, has thrown over 100 pitches in each of his last two starts. He faced San Francisco at home last September and scattered two runs along with six hits over five innings, and owns a sparkling 1.88 ERA on the road this season.

The Brewers took 6 of the 7 meetings in last year’s season series.

Pomeranz bounced back from two dreadful outings in which he surrendered 13 runs – three homers – over four innings of work in losses to Arizona and Baltimore, to hold the Los Angeles Dodgers scoreless in five innings last Friday. It did take him 92 pitches to get through those five innings, but kept the ball in the yard for the first time in three starts. Pomeranz last saw Milwaukee as a member of the Boston Red Sox in 2017 and was tagged for six runs across four innings.

Sometimes you see a pitching matchup and odds that you just can’t pass up. Well, this is the case here with two pitchers who are on opposite ends of the spectrum. The Brewers are hitting .317 against lefties in their last 10 games and should feast on Pomeranz tonight.
