Braves vs Mets Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [6/30/19]

Atlanta (50-34) at NY Mets (37-47)
When: Sunday, June 30th, 2019
Where: Citi Field,
New York, NY
Time: 7:05 ET | TV: ESPN
Opening Odds: New York -130/9

Once again, the New York Mets bullpen failed to hold a late-inning lead and dropped yet another game in what has been a very long week for the franchise. We predicted yesterday that the Braves would continue the Mets misery and Atlanta needed an eighth inning rally to make our pick a winner. Trailing 4-3 entering that inning, Nick Markakis tied the game with a solo home run, then rookie Austin Riley came up big again with the go-ahead bomb – his second of the weekend – to give Atlanta 6.5 game lead in the National League East over Philadelphia. Riley now has 14 home runs in 42 major league games, as the Braves improved to 6-3 against New York this season. The loss was the 18th in 27 games for the Mets, who dropped 13 games behind Atlanta in the division and will turn to Noah Syndergaard on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball to stop the bleeding. New York right fielder Jeff McNeil finished 2-for-4 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI Saturday to raise his batting average to .344 on the season. The Mets bullpen gave up three runs on 10 hits over seven innings, and owns an 8.18 ERA with runs allowed in 18 of their past 20 games. The Braves will entertain the Phillies for three games starting Tuesday, while the Mets play an interleague series with the well-traveled New York Yankees.

Pitchers: Braves – Max Fried (9-3, 3.96 ERA) | Mets – Noah Syndergaard (5-4, 4.55)

Max Fried seems to be back on track after struggling in the first part of June and looks to end the month on a high-note after allowing four runs on 10 hits with 14 strikeouts over 12 innings in his last two outings. Fried had a 7.52 ERA with 17 runs allowed on 31 hits in just 20.1 innings in his previous four turns, but victories over Mets and Chicago Cubs got him back on track. The lefty allowed two runs on eight hits with six strikeouts June 19th against New York, and has a 1.77 ERA in seven career appearances versus them.

Syndergaard will pitch for the first time since June 15th when he allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits against St. Louis. He landed on the injured list after that start with a right hamstring strain and made a rehab start Tuesday for Single-A Brooklyn, allowing three runs in five innings while throwing 67 pitches. Syndergaard is 0-2 with a 3.49 ERA in seven career starts against Atlanta, but has not seen them this season.

I really don’t care who’s pitching for the Mets right now. This team is in a funk that doesn’t show any signs of ending. Atlanta is the second-best team in the National League and are an impressive 26-17 away from home. Fried should have his third straight strong outing and second against the Mets to give Atlanta the sweep.
