If you love high-scoring hockey games, then Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals between the St. Louis Blues and San Jose Sharks was just for you. Unfortunately, I had that game pegged all wrong, taking the under in a game that featured nine goals. The Sharks led from start to finish Saturday in taking Game 1 6-3 behind an offense that continues to excel at home. Logan Couture and linemates Timo Meier and Gustav Nyquist recorded eight points on Saturday and will look to help the Sharks keep control of home ice when they take on the Blues in Game 2 Monday night at SAP Center. Couture and Meier each had a pair of goals and an assist Saturday. Couture leads the NHL in goals (11) and points (17) in the playoffs and is only three goals behind captain Joe Pavelski’s franchise record set in 2016. The Sharks improved to 7-2 at home during this postseason while the Blues lost away from home for just the second time. St. Louis shot themselves in the foot all night with 12 giveaways that made life tough on goaltender Jordan Binnington. San Jose is one home win shy of matching its franchise record for most in a postseason set in 2016.

A couple of offensive stars need to step up for St. Louis including winger Vladimir Tarasenko, who’s -3 rating in the series opener dropped him to -8 overall, tied with Tampa Bay C Steven Stamkos for the worst in the 2019 postseason. Forward Brayden Schenn has been held off the scoresheet in seven straight games and 11 of 14 this playoffs. Binnington, who is a finalist for the Calder Memorial Trophy (top rookie), rode a 24-5-1 run in the regular season to help get the Blues to where they are today, but allowed five goals on 24 shots Saturday. Fellow teammates took the blame saying they hung him out to dry – and boy did they. Jaden Schwartz assisted on a Joel Edmundson goal to boost his point total to 12 in the playoffs after recording 36 in the regular season.

This San Jose offense has a lot of momentum since their improbable comeback over Vegas in the first round. Couture has 45 career playoff goals and trails only Washington captain Alex Ovechkin (50) for the most since 2010 and has double-digit goal totals in consecutive postseasons. Couture sits at 98 career playoff points, while Pavelski is at 99 heading into Game 2. Offensive-minded defensemen Brent Burns (15) and Erik Karlsson (13) have combined for 28 points through the first 15 playoff games, the most for a defensive tandem since Detroit’s Paul Coffey (17) and Nicklas Lidstrom (15) in 1995. Goalie Martin Jones improved to 9-5 this postseason with 31 saves in Game 1.

I have to ride this San Jose train at home in Game 2. They are really feeling it and frustrated the heck out of the Blues on Saturday. I say they keep the offense rolling here on Monday.

Pick: Sharks -133
