Blue Jays vs Braves Preview & Free Pick | Prediction [7/11/18]

Toronto (42-48) at Atlanta (50-40)
When: Wednesday, July 11th 2018
Where: SunTrust Park, Cumberland, GA
Time: 7:35 ET | TV: Sportsnet, FS Southeast
Opening Odds: Atlanta -153/9

The Atlanta Braves will look for a better defensive effort on Wednesday when they go for a split in their two-game interleague series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, sending All-Star Mike Foltynewicz to the mound against Sam Gaviglio. The Blue Jays took advantage of two eighth-inning errors to score five times during Tuesday’s 6-2 victory in the first game of a stretch in which Toronto will play 16 of 22 away from Rogers Centre. First baseman Justin Smoak continues to hit the ball well for Toronto, hitting a solo homer Tuesday to improve to 7-for-15 during a four-game hitting streak, while shortstop Aledmys Diaz added a two-run double in the pivotal eighth inning. The setback continued Atlanta’s recent slump as they dropped out of first place in the National League East with Philadelphia’s victory over the New York Mets. The Braves have lost 11 of their last 18 games – including five losses in their past seven at SunTrust Park. All-Star second baseman Ozzie Albies finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored and is hitting .438 during his seven-game hitting streak. Right fielder Nick Markakis collected two hits Tuesday in his first game since being selected to his first Midsummer Classic, and is 7-for-16 during his current four-game hitting streak. Atlanta committed three errors Tuesday after entering the series with just 40 in 89 games this season. Toronto improved to 9-4 in interleague play while the Braves dropped to 6-8.

Pitchers: Blue Jays – Sam Gaviglio (2-2, 3.81 ERA) | Braves – Mike Foltynewicz (6-5, 2.37)

Gaviglio has had a solid season both at Triple-A Buffalo and with the Blue Jays. The 28-year-old has a 3.97 ERA in nine starts for Toronto after posting a 1.86 ERA in five starts for Buffalo. He has 45 strikeouts in 47.2 innings while allowing three earned runs or fewer seven times. Gaviglio gave up just one earned run in 4.1 innings against the New York Yankees on Friday, striking out six in a no-decision.

Foltynewicz is one of 25 first-time All Stars selected to this year’s squad, but will be looking to rebound from one of his worst outings of the season. He gave up five runs over six innings in a loss Friday at Milwaukee after not allowing more than two earned runs in 15 of his first 16 starts. He ranks second in the NL in hits per nine innings (6.16), fourth in ERA and seventh in strikeouts (114) and is holding hitters to a .190 average and a .596 OPS.

The Braves are in a bit of slump right now, but Foltynewicz is one of the best in the game this year and will prevent Atlanta from going on long losing streaks for years to come. Errors did Atlanta in last night – it won’t tonight. Lay the buck and a half with the Braves here.

Pick: Braves -155
