The Vegas Golden Knights were the darlings of the National Hockey League just a month into the season, and many predicted they wouldn’t be able to sustain that, especially on the road. Fast forward to January, and the Golden Knights are a true force to be reckoned with – holding the league’s best mark after Sunday’s 5-1 thumping at Carolina. Vegas looks to pad the league’s best home record when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday night. The Golden Knights are only two wins shy of tying the NHL record for wins (33) by an expansion club, set by Florida and Anaheim during the 1993-94 season – and they still have 36 games remaining. Vegas has been unstoppable at home with a league-best 18-2-2 record and has not lost in regulation at T-Mobile Arena since November 28th. The Blue Jackets will have plenty of rest heading to Las Vegas – which has proven to be a bad thing for many teams – as they have played once in 10 days and have been idle since Thursday, when they squeezed out a 2-1 shootout victory over Dallas coming out of their bye week. The Blue Jackets acquired G Jeff Zatkoff from the Los Angeles Kings for future considerations.

Artemi Panarin scored the lone shootout goal in Columbus’ win over Dallas, the team’s league-high sixth win in the format and Panarin’s fifth conversion in nine attempts this season. Cam Atkinson, expected to be out for four to six weeks after undergoing surgery for a broken bone in his foot on December 27th, participated in practice Monday. Atkinson said he still needs to be medically cleared, but noted he could return sooner than the initial timetable for recovery. Columbus will finish their two-game road trip in Arizona on Thursday.

William Karlsson, who was left unprotected by Columbus and scored six times in 81 games, ranks among the league leaders with 25 goals, including 10 in the past 13 games. Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury (1.68 GAA) has allowed two goals or fewer in eight of his last nine starts and has two shutouts on the season in 16 games – one more than he had in 38 games with the Penguins last season. Forward James Neal has scored in three straight games and has 10 goals and 19 points in 20 meetings versus Columbus.

The Blue Jackets have probably been in Vegas for a few days now and teams have come out sluggish against the Knights in T-Mobile Arena. I don’t know if this team will come back down to earth or not, but I’m not betting against them right now.
