The Los Angeles Lakers may not be a playoff team this season, but they are definitely playing better than a handful of teams that will make the postseason. L.A. seeks continued momentum when they host the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night – a team the Lakers haven’t beaten in the past 14 meetings, including eight of those at Staples Center. Los Angeles is coming off an impressive four-game road trip sweep and have won five in a row overall after overcoming a 17-point, second-half deficit in a 116-112 triumph at the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday. The Trail Blazers are just as hot, riding a six-game winning streak that catapulted the team into the No. 3 spot in the West. Portland is coming off a 108-100 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday to finish-up their three-game homestand. The Blazers currently sit in first place in the competitive Northwest Division, where just four games separate them and last place Utah.

Portland continues to be led by their dynamic backcourt duo of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, who combined for 48 points on Saturday, but the bench has really stepped up as well during the winning streak. Reserve power forward Ed Davis has recorded double-digit rebounds in each of the last three games and rookie center Zach Collins from Gonzaga scored 12 points off the bench on Saturday to reach double figures for the first time since December 23rd, when he scored 11 at the Lakers. Small forward Maurice Harkless (knee) sat out Saturday and is day-to-day.

The Blazers have covered the spread in 8 of the last 10 games.

Rookie point guard Lonzo Ball drew plenty of criticism for his play early in the season, shooting just 35.6 percent from the floor and 30.3 percent from 3-point range when he went down with a hamstring injury on January 13th. Since then, Ball has been a different player since returning to the lineup after the All-Star break and is shooting 55.2 percent from the floor while going 14-of-22 from beyond the arc over his last four games. Shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope played a season-high 43 minutes on Saturday and recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds. The Lakers will play four of their next five at home including a visit from LeBron and the Cavaliers next week.

The Lakers are a different team than the last meeting against Portland, especially with the way Ball is playing. L.A. held Portland to 41.1% shooting in December, but it’s the offense that will get the job done here tonight. The Lakers will extend their winning streak with an outright win on Monday.
