The Baylor Bears have passed a few big early tests and now will get another one, when they visit the 20th-ranked Xavier Musketeers on Tuesday night in a non-conference battle in Cincinnati. Baylor participated – and won – the Hall of Fame Classic last week that included Wisconsin, Creighton, and UCLA. Baylor took care of the Badgers and Blue Jays to capture the tournament title using dominating defense. The Bears gave up 65 points to Wisconsin and 59 to Creighton and have yet to allow more than 66 in any game this season. They are currently ranked 17th in the country in points allowed (59.4) and will get a good test from Xavier. Trevon Bluiett, who averages a team-high 21.3 points per game, recorded a season-low 11 points in the Musketeer’s 102-86 setback to Arizona State in the title game of the Las Vegas Invitational on Friday. The Bears are 3-0 against Xavier with all three meetings coming since 2009.

The Bears got most of their offense against Creighton from just three players as King McClure (19), Jo Lual-Acuil, Jr. (15), and Terry Maston (15) scored 49 of the team’s 65 points. Lual-Acuil also had 15 rebounds en route to his third straight double-double and the big senior is averaging 14 points and 11.2 boards for the season. Manu Lecomte, the team’s top scorer at 19 points per games, recorded only nine points on 2-of-8 shooting versus the Blue Jays in his worst effort of the season.

Baylor and Xavier are neck-and-neck in the latest Sagarin Ratings.

J.P. Macura scored a team-high 23 points against Arizona State after scoring eight total over the previous two games and is the team’s second leading scorer at 13.8 points per game. Bluiett is shooting 56.2% from the field and 51.3% from three-point range. Kaiser Gates isn’t far behind at 42.1% from beyond the arc, including multiple 3s in five of the team’s six games. Xavier is second in the nation in field goal percentage (56.8) and 16th in points scored (91.2).

The Bears aren’t very deep, but the guys they do have on the court are excellent defenders and should be able to slow down Xavier. Baylor is already 2-0 against top 50 teams according to the latest Sagarin ratings and won’t be intimidated by the hostile crowd.
