The Oakland Athletics have been on an incredible run since the beginning of June, and are just a game out of the AL Wild Card thanks to powering their way through away from home. The A’s are now 35-21 on the road after a four-game sweep in Texas this week that included a 7-6 triumph on Thursday, and have scored 51 runs during their current six-game winning streak – including 41 against the Rangers. Matt Chapman went 3-for-3 with a homer and three runs scored Thursday for the Athletics, who lead the major leagues with 96 dingers on the road and figure to add to that total when they visit hitter-friendly Coors Field to take on the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. A’s DH Khris Davis, who hit six homers during a four-game streak before being kept in the park on Thursday, will get the start in left field for the series in a National League park. Colorado avoided a third consecutive loss on Wednesday as it squeaked by Houston 3-2 on a walk-off solo homer by Charlie Blackmon for its sixth win in seven home games and eighth in 10 overall. Blackmon, who has eclipsed 20 home runs for the third straight season, brings an eight-game hitting streak into the series opener during which he has gone 12-for-32. Carlos Gonzalez also went yard in Wednesday’s win for the Rockies, who are two games behind the first-place Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West and one back in the NL Wild Card race.

Pitchers: Athletics – Sean Manaea (9-6, 3.38 ERA) | Rockies – Kyle Freeland (8-6, 3.28)

Sean Manaea continues to be the ace of this Oakland staff and has not lost a game in his last nine outings during which he is 4-0 with a 3.09 ERA after settling for a no-decision against San Francisco on Sunday. Manaea surrendered just two runs and four hits while recording five strikeouts without issuing a walk in 6.2 innings. This will be Manaea’s first meeting with Colorado, but he is 1-2 with a 4.45 ERA in five interleague starts this year.

Kyle Freeland has been terrific and hasn’t lost in his last seven trips to the mound after allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings against Arizona last time out. Freeland has just two victories over those seven starts but allowed fewer than three runs six times while posting a 2.55 ERA. He will also be facing Oakland for the first time, and has given up three runs and 13 hits over 12 innings in two interleague no-decisions this season.

It’s really hard to go against this Oakland team right now. They were dead in the water twice against Texas this week and pulled both of them out. They can really mash the ball and should be excited to be playing in Coors Field this weekend. I say they take the opener behind their ace.
