Two teams that are making their way back into the Wild Card hunt will begin a weekend interleague series on Friday when the Los Angeles Angels visit the St. Louis Cardinals. Both teams are coming off tough extra-innings losses on Thursday and will look to regroup as Griffin Canning opposes Michael Wacha at Busch Stadium. The Angels are nearing the end of a long 11-game road trip and came up just short in sweeping four from the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday, losing on a walk-off homer in the 10th inning 7-5, but winning the season series 6-1. L.A. is just three games out of a wild card spot in the American League after winning seven of their last 10 games and scoring five runs or more in all but two in that span. The Cardinals are 7-4 in their last 11 to get back to within 1.5 games of the NL Wild Card and three behind the first place Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. St. Louis rallied with four runs in the seventh and eighth innings before falling to the Miami Marlins 7-6 in 10 innings to split the four-game series. The Cardinals’ 2-6 hitters were a combined 11-for-28 including three hits apiece by Jose Martinez and Yadier Molina. The teams last met in 2016 with the Cardinals taking all three games at Busch Stadium and outscored the Angels 25-13.

Pitchers: Angels – Griffin Canning (2-3, 3.93 ERA) | Cardinals – Michael Wacha (4-3, 6.00 ERA)

Griffin Canning has finished at least six innings in five of his last six outings, but has been shaky in the last three, allowing three runs or more in each, while the Angels have lost two of those starts. The rookie allowed four runs on six hits over six frames in a 6-5 setback at Tampa Bay last time out but struck out seven to raise his season total to 54 in 50.1 innings. He will get his first crack at St. Louis.

Wacha has been up and down recently, following up a good start with a bad one and is coming off a clunker at the New York Mets on Sunday when he allowed six runs – five earned – and seven hits over four innings of work in an 8-7 loss. He shut out the Marlins over six innings in his previous start after allowing seven runs to Kansas City on May 22nd. Wacha, who has allowed at home run in five of his last six starts, will face the Angels for the first time.

These teams are pretty even right now, so I’m going to look at the total here. Wacha has a 7.36 ERA at home and all four of his Busch Stadium starts have gone over, while Canning has a 5.50 ERA in his last three starts. The Angels and Cardinals don’t get together often, but when they do, the bats come alive. 10 of the last 12 meetings have gone over, so I’ll stick with that trend here.
