The New York Yankees look for a sweep of a rare 4-game series when they
take on the Detroit Tigers Thursday night at Comerica Park in MoTown.
New York has taken the first 3 games of this series, outscoring the
Tigers 21-7.
The Yanks have won 5 games in a row, 7 of their last 8, and have grabbed
a share of first place, with the Red Sox, in the AL East.
The Tigers had won 15 of their previous 16 games before dropping their
last 4 in a row. But Detroit still owns the best record in the majors
and leads the AL Central by a game and a half over the 2nd-place White
Sox.
New York took the season series from the Tigers last year 5 games to
1.
Detroit is 15-11 at home this year, while the Yanks are 15-11 on the
road.
NY’s C-M Wang (5-2, 5.40) has allowed 13 ER and 22 hits in his last
21 IP, but he’s only issued 2 walks in that span. Wang made 2 starts vs.
Detroit last year, giving up 2 ER and 11 H+W in 13 1/3 innings of work.
Tigers’ rookie Justin Verlander (7-3, 2.55) has been absolutely great,
allowing just 1 ER and 20 H+W in his last 24 IP. Verlander has never started
a game vs. the Yankees.
The over/under is 7-4 in Wang’s starts this season, 4-6 in Verlander’s
starts.
New York leads the AL with a .372 team OBP, and averages 6.0 RPG. The
Yanks have scored 63 runs over their last 8 games.
The Tigers own a .331 team OBP, 8th-best in the AL, and average 5.0
RPG. But Detroit has scored just 10 runs total in their last 5 games.
The New York bullpen has given up 8 ER and 20 H+W in its last 17 2/3
IP.
Detroit relievers have given up 10 ER and 31 H+W in their last 17 2/3
IP.
Yanks SS Jeter and OF Damon both sat out Wednesday’s game with various
ailments, but both are listed as probable for Thursday’s game. But OF
Sheffield has missed the last 2 games, and is listed as doubtful for Thursday.
The over/under is 26-24 in New York games this year, but 18-32 in Tigers
games and 9-15 at Comerica Park.
