The New York Yankees look to keep the heat on the Boston Red Sox in the AL East while at the same time, sweep their cross-town rival the New York Mets on Thursday night at Citi Field. Yankees’ slugger Aaron Judge belted his American League-best 37th homer in the fourth inning of Wednesday’s 5-3 win before writing his name into the record books in the ninth with a strikeout, marking the 33rd consecutive game in one season that he’s struck out to set a record for position players. Judge can match pitcher Vida Blue (34) and move within one of another pitcher, Bill Stoneman (35) for the most consecutive games with a strikeout should he do so on Thursday. The Yankees have had their way in the Subway Series, winning 11 of the last 15 matchups. The Yankees can secure the third season sweep in the Series on Thursday. They did it in 2003 while the Mets swept a four-game series in 2013. New York starts the night still 4.5 games behind their bigger rival, the Red Sox. The Mets, who are starting to let go of high-priced players, have lost nine of their last 13 overall. Juan Lagares had a single and a double on Wednesday and has four hits in the series as he works his way back from a two-month absence due to a fractured thumb. Yoenis Cespedes has scored a run in five of his last six games.

Pitchers: Yankees – Luis Severino (9-5, 3.32 ERA) | Mets – Steven Matz (2-6, 5.54)

Luis Severino will look to bounce back after his four-start winning streak came to a screeching halt on Saturday, allowing a career-worst 10 runs (eight earned) in 4.1 innings of a 10-5 loss to Boston. The loss also snapped a six-start unbeaten run for Severino, who dominated the Mets in an encounter last season, allowing one run on one hit while striking out five in 4.1 innings to pick up the win in relief.

BUFFALO BILLS VS PHILADELPHIA EAGLES PREVIEW AND PREDICTION

Steven Matz hasn’t won a game since June 28th and has looked horrible since then. Over his last seven starts, Matz is 0-5 with a 9.51 ERA despite a decent outing at Philadelphia on Saturday. Matz allowed two runs on four hits over 5.2 innings versus the Phillies, but still suffered a 3-1 loss. He had allowed 29 runs including six homers in his previous six outings. Matz allowed six runs in six innings of work in a 9-5 loss at Yankee Stadium last season.

The Mets are ready for this season to be over, while the Yanks need every win they can get. Matz isn’t going to turn his season around tonight. Look for the Yankees to pound him and for Severino to have an easy time on the mound.

Pick: Yankees -1.5 -115
