Yankees vs. Red Sox Preview and Pick

The Boston Red Sox look to extend their lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East when the two teams meet up for the second game of a 3-game series Tuesday night in Beantown.

The Red Sox won the first game of this series 9-5 Monday night.

These two teams are on opposite tracks. Boston has won 3 of its last 4 games, while the Yanks have dropped 4 of their last 5.

The Sox lead the AL East by 2 ½ games over 2nd-place New York.

The Yanks won the season series with the Sox 10-9 last year, the over/under going 10-7-2. But Boston has taken 4 of 5 games from New York this year, the o/u going 3-2.

New York is 10-11 on the road this season, 1-4 as underdogs.

Boston is 12-6 at home this year, 21-12 as favorites.

New York’s Jaret Wright (1-3, 4.94) has allowed 7 ER in his last 17 1/3 IP. In 2 starts vs. the Red Sox last year, Wright gave up 5 ER and 18 H+W in just 8 1/3 IP.

Boston’s Wakefield (3-5, 4.17) has given up 10 ER in his last 19 IP. In 8 starts vs. the Yankees last year and this, Wakefield has allowed 25 ER and 58 H+W in 53 2/3 IP.

Interestingly, the over/under is 1-4 in Wright’s starts this year, 2-7 in Wakefield’s starts.

New York owns a .371 team OBP, best in the AL, and averages 5.7 RPG.

Boston owns a .364 team OBP, 3rd-best in the league, and averages 5.5 RPG.

New York might activate OF Gary Sheffield in time for Tuesday’s game. The Yanks are already without OF Hideki Matsui, and 1B Jason Giambi is listed as doubtful for Tuesday.

The Red Sox list OF Wily Mo Pena as questionable for Tuesday with a wrist injury. Also, C Jason Varitek doesn’t usually catch Wakefield.

The o/u is 21-22 in Yankees games this year, 23-18 in Red Sox games, and 10-8 at Fenway Park.
