by Ultimatecapper.com Staff
The New York Yankees visit the Nation’s Capital for the first time in 35 years this weekend when they take on the Washington Nationals in a 3-game interleague series at RFK Stadium beginning Friday night.
New York just took two of three games from the Cleveland Indians, but the Yanks have dropped five of their last seven overall. Despite this, New York has taken over first place in the AL East from the Boston Red Sox.
Washington stumbled through a good part of the beginning of this season, then went on a 17-7 run. But the Nationals just got swept four games by the Colorado Rockies, getting outscored 35-14, and sit in fourth place in the NL East, 13 ½ games behind the division-leading New York Mets.
The Yankees are 17-13 on the road this season, while Washington is 13-18 at home.
These two teams haven’t met since 2001, when the Nats were still the Montreal Expos.
New York sends Jaret Wright (3-4, 4.44) to the mound Friday, while Washington counters with Shawn Hill (1-1, 1.80). Wright has yet to pitch into the 7th inning in any of his nine starts this season, while Hill is coming off a 7-inning, two-hit performance vs. Philadelphia last Sunday.
The Yanks will go with Shawn Chacon (4-1, 5.23) on Saturday and C-M Wang (7-2, 4.15) Sunday. For the Nationals, Ramon Ortiz (5-5, 4.88) heads to the mound Saturday and Mike O’Connor (3-4, 3.70) takes the hill on Sunday.
New York leads the majors with its .368 team OBP, and averages 5.8 runs per game.
Washington owns a .329 team OBP, 3rd-worst in the NL, and averages 4.5 RPG.
The Yankee bullpen has allowed just 3 ER and 16 H+W in its last 13 2/3 IP.
The Nationals bullpen has been rapped for 12 ER and 31 H+W in its last 16 innings of work.
New York manager Joe Torre will miss Friday’s game after being suspended for one game earlier this week. And Yanks OF Johnny Damon is listed as questionable for Friday with a hamstring injury.
The over/under is 35-28 in Yankees games this season, 34-33 in Nats games and 16-15 at RFK Stadium.

The Ultimatecapper Pick: The Yankees are vulnerable in this spot. We'd either take the Nats or pass.
