It's fourth place in the PAC 10 vs. seventh place in the ACC when the Virginia Cavaliers visit the Stanford Cardinal Tuesday night in an opening round game in the National Invitational Tournament.
Virginia went 7-9 in the ACC regular season, placing them in a tie for seventh in the conference. Stanford went 11-7 in the PAC 10, good for a tie for fourth with Arizona.
Virginia has lost four of its last five games after falling to North Carolina in the ACC tournament last Friday 79-67 as 12-point dogs.
Stanford is 3-6 over its last nine games. The Cardinal fell to Arizona 73-68 as 3-point dogs in the conference tournament last Thursday.
The Cavs are 12-11 against the spread on the season, 7-8 ats as an underdog, 4-7 ats on the road.
The Cardinal is 14-13 vs. the number this season, 8-8 ats as chalk, 6-7 ats at home.
Straight up, Stanford is 10-3 at home this season, while the Cavaliers are 2-10 in road games.
The Cavs played one game vs. a PAC 10 team this season, and it didn't go well. Arizona pounded Virginia 81-51 back in November. But that shouldn't get them down; Arizona beat Stanford three times this season, which probably kept the Cardinal out of the NCAA tournament for the first time in 12 seasons.
Stanford played one game vs. an ACC team this season, a 59-52 loss to Virginia Tech in December. Virginia beat the Hokies twice this season, 54-49 and 81-77.
Neither team has shot the ball too well this season, except from the free-throw line (Virginia 75%, Stanford 77%). The Cavaliers own a +3.8 rebounds per game margin, the Cardinal a +2.4 margin.
In the Sagarin conference rankings at usatoday.com, the ACC is rated third out of 32 teams, the PAC 10 seventh.
The Sagarin PREDICTOR ratings have Stanford 80th at 79.8, Virginia 81st at 79.5. And in the latest RPI at NCAAsports.com, the Cavaliers are ranked #79, the Cardinal #86.The over is 15-12 in Stanford games this season, 10-15 in Virginia games.
