The Chicago White Sox get a chance to directly make up ground on first place in the American League Central Division when they host the Detroit Tigers Tuesday night in the opener of a 3-game set at U.S. Cellular Field.
Detroit, which still owns the best record in the majors, alsostill sits atop the AL Central, 2½ games clear of Chicago.
But the Tigers have struggled recently, losing six of their last eight games. Meanwhile, the White Sox haven’t been able to take advantage of Detroit’s recent woes, losing five of their last six themselves.
The Tigers are a solid 20-7 on the road this season, and 11-7 as underdogs. Chicago is 20-8 at home this year, 29-20 as favorites.
The White Sox swept three games from Detroit back in April in the teams’ first series of this season.
Tigers lefty Robertson (5-3, 3.42) has given up 8 ER and 28 H+W in his last 22 IP. Detroit is 7-4 in Robertson’s starts this year, the over/under 5-5.
In six starts vs. Chicago last year, Robertson allowed 15 ER and 57 H+W in 39 2/3 IP.
White Sox starter Garcia (7-3, 4.57) tossed 8 shutout innings vs. the Cubs two weeks ago, but since then has been hit for 10 ER and 20 hits in 11 2/3 innings. Chicago is 8-3 in Garcia’s starts this year, the o/u 7-3.
In five starts vs. the Tigers this year and last, Garcia has limited Detroit to 12 ER and 39 H+W in 37 IP.
Detroit owns a .331 team OBP this season, 8th-best in the AL, and is averaging 4.9 runs per game.
The White Sox own a .349 team OBP, 6th-best in the league, and average 5.5 RPG. But that average dips to 4.8 RPG vs. left-handed pitching.
The Tigers bullpen has allowed 7 ER and 20 H+W in its last 12 2/3 IP.
The Chicago pen has been bounced around for 12 ER and 28 H+W in just its last 11 2/3 innings of work.
White Sox slugger Jim Thome (who’s missed the last three games) is listed as probable for Tuesday. But some sources list OF Podsednik as questionable and catcher Pierzynski as doubtful.
The o/u is 20-34 in Tigers games this season, but 30-23 in White Sox games and 16-10 at U.S. Cellular Field.

The Ultimatecapper Pick: With the Sox being a bit beatup, the value lies with the Tigers. Tough game though, we'd probably pass.
