The Dallas Wings hope to continue their hot shooting as they take on the Los Angeles Sparks for the second time in three games on Sunday afternoon in Arlington, Texas. The Wings are coming off a dominating 93-80 win over the Seattle Storm in which they tied a WNBA record with 16 three-pointers made. The more impressive showing might have been what the Wings did to the Storm under the basket, outrebounding them 46-25 including 16-5 on the offensive end. Glory Johnson recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 11 points and a season high-tying 16 rebounds while Karima Christmas-Kelly added 14 points in the victory. Skylar Diggins-Smith led the team with 23 points against Seattle and is the league’s eighth-leading scorer at 18.5 points per game. She drained 5-of-7 from 3-point land as Dallas also set a franchise record with its 16-of-26 shooting from downtown. The Wings remained seventh in the league standings, with only the top eight teams qualifying for the postseason. Dallas will have a home game with Phoenix on Thursday.
With Dallas clinging onto a playoff spot, the Sparks will be clinching a postseason berth very soon as they are second in the league with an 18-6 record, three games behind the Minnesota Lynx. The Sparks have won four games in a row and seven of its last 10 after an 87-74 victory over the New York Liberty on Friday. The game was tied at 44 at halftime before Los Angeles outscored New York 25-11 in the third quarter. Candace Parker led the team with 24 points and Odyssey Sims, a former Wing, added 20 points for Los Angeles. Sims has recorded 20 or more points in two of her last three games and is averaging 6.8 points a game on the season. Los Angeles leads the league in field goal percentage offense at 48.2% and ranks second in points allowed at 76.8. The Sparks have won two of their first three meetings with the Wings this season, including a 95-74 rout of Dallas on July 30th. Parker had 23 points and Nneka Ogwumike, the league’s fifth-leading scorer who is averaging 19.5 points, added 22 to lead Los Angeles. This will be the first of a five-game road trip for the Sparks who will have a big matchup with Minnesota coming up on Friday.
This is a bit of a revenge game for Dallas, who are trying to get in the playoffs with a strong finish to the season. I worry the Sparks will be looking ahead to their matchup with Minnesota next week and might not be as focused against the hot shooting Wings. I’ll take the points.
Pick: Wings +7.5
