The defending World Champion Chicago White Sox will try to put a dent in the Detroit Tigers’ lead in the American League Central when the two teams hook up for a three-game series beginning Tuesday night in MoTown.
These two teams own the two best records in Major League Baseball. Detroit has recently upped its’ lead in the AL Central to 4 ½ games over the White Sox.
Chicago just got swept three games by the New York Yankees over the weekend, but the ChiSox still lead the AL wild-card race by 2 ½ games over the Yanks.
The Tigers just scored 28 runs in taking three of four games from the Kansas City Royals over the weekend.
The White Sox have won five of six games with Detroit thus far this season.
Chicago is 24-20 on the road this year, 8-7 as underdogs.
The Tigers are 29-15 at home this season, and 47-18 as favorites.
John Garland (8-3, 5.37) starts in the series opener Tuesday for the White Sox. This is Garland’s first start since July 5. In his last 18 1/3 IP, Garland has allowed 8 ER and 27 H+W. Chicago is 11-6 in Garland’s starts this season, the over/under 7-9.
Garland had four solid outings vs. Detroit last year, but has been bombed in two starts vs. the Tigers this year. Overall in those six starts, Garland has allowed 17 ER and 52 H+W in 46 2/3 innings on the mound.
Lefty Nate Robertson (8-5, 3.36) takes the hill for Detroit Tuesday. Robertson has given up 8 ER and 30 H+W in his last 22 IP. The Tigers are 10-8 in Robertson’s starts this season, the o/u 6-11.
Robertson has made seven starts vs. the White Sox this year and last, allowing 16 ER on 66 H+W in 46 IP.
Chicago leads the majors with its’ 532 runs scored. The White Sox own a .353 team OBP, which ranks 4th-best in the AL, and are averaging 5.8 runs per game.
Detroit ranks 10th in the league with its’ .331 team OBP, and is averaging 5.3 RPG.
The Sox bullpen has allowed 8 ER and 15 H+W in just 7 IP since the All-Star break. And the Chicago pitching staff has been clobbered for 55 runs just in the last seven games.
The Tigers’ pen has given up 7 ER and 25 H+W in 15 IP since the All-Star break.
The o/u is 48-39 in ChiSox games this season, but 35-54 in Detroit games and 17-25 at Comerica Park. Five of the six meetings between these two teams this season have gone under their posted totals. And games at Comerica are averaging 9.0 RPG this year.
