The Cincinnati Reds look to continue their recent good play on the road when they visit the New York Mets for a four-game series starting Monday night at Shea Stadium.
Cincinnati just got swept three games at home by the White Sox over the weekend, getting outscored 28-11. The Reds have lost eight of their last nine games, all of which were played at home, but they’ve won their last seven games on the road. Overall, Cincy is 20-13 in away games this year.
After winning eight games in a row, New York just dropped two of three games at home to Baltimore over the weekend. The Mets are 20-13 at home this season.
Cincinnati is in second place in the NL Central, 5 ½ games back of division-leading St. Louis.
New York, which owns the best record in the National League, has extended its lead in the NL East to 9 ½ games over second-place Philadelphia.
These two teams split six games last season.
Bronson Arroyo (8-3, 2.51) pitches Monday for the Reds against Orlando Hernandez (4-5, 5.50) for the Mets. Cincy is 10-4 in Arroyo’s starts this year, while Hernandez is 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA for the Mets since coming over in a trade with Arizona.
The Reds will go with Elizardo Ramirez (2-5, 3.44) Tuesday, Joe Mays (in his first start of the year) Wednesday and Eric Milton (4-3, 4.14) Thursday. The Mets will counter with Steve Trachsel (4-4, 4.81) Tuesday, Alay Soler (2-1, 3.00) Wednesday and Pedro Martinez (6-3, 3.01, .93 WHIP) Thursday.
