The first-place Boston Red Sox head to the Midwest to take on the Minnesota Twins in the opener of a three-game series Tuesday night at the Metrodome.
Boston just split four games with the Texas Rangers over the weekend, and in the process grabbed a one-game lead over the New York Yankees in the AL East.
Minnesota just took two of three games from the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend, and sits in fourth place in the AL Central, 12 games back of the division-leading Detroit Tigers.
The Red Sox are 18-15 on the road this season, 6-8 as underdogs.
The Twins own one of the biggest home/road disparities in the majors. Minnesota is 18-10 at the Metrodome, but just 10-24 away from home. The Twins are also 15-7 as favorites.
Boston won the season series with Minnesota last year 4 games to 2.
Red Sox starter Schilling (9-2, 3.81) has given up 9 ER and 19 hits in his last 21 IP. And Schilling has helped himself by not issuing a walk in his last five starts, covering 34 2/3 innings. Schilling did, however, give up three solo home runs in his most recent start last Thursday vs. the Yankees.
Schilling has not started a game vs. Minnesota since 2004, and, somehow, has never started a game at the Metrodome.
Boston is 11-2 in Schilling’s starts this year, the over/under 8-5.
Twins’ lefty Santana (6-4, 3.16) has given up 5 ER and 17 H+W in his last 20 innings of work. In his only start vs. the Red Sox last year, Santana gave up 3 ER and 8 H+W in 6 IP.
Minnesota is 9-4 in Santana’s starts this year, the o/u 7-6.
Boston owns a .366 team OBP this season, 2nd-best in the AL, and averages 5.4 runs per game, 5.0 vs. LH pitching.
The Twins own a .332 team OPB, 8th-best in the league, and are averaging 4.6 RPG.
The Red Sox bullpen has given up 12 ER and 27 H+W in its last 15 1/3 IP.
The Minnesota bullpen has allowed 11 ER and 31 H+W in its last 21 innings of work.
The o/u is 35-25 in Boston games this year, 33-26 in Twins games, and 20-8 at the Metrodome.
